A little fox wakes. He looks. His red hat is gone. "Where is my hat?" he asks. He pats his head. He looks by the bed. He looks by the door. He listens. "Toc-toc," says the door. He smiles. He will find the hat.
He puts on a small bag. He hops out. "Hop!" he goes. The yard is soft. The sun is warm. He sees a trail. Tiny paw prints. Tiny leaf bits. He smells the air. He says, "Hmm." He follows the trail.
Along the way he meets a duck. "Quack," says the duck. "Did you see a hat?" asks the fox. The duck nods. The duck points with her wing. "Plouf," says the pond. They look together.
They find a crumb. They find a button. They find a toy car. The trail goes to a pile of leaves. A squirrel is there. The squirrel looks shy. "I saw a hat," he says. He holds the hat. He played with it. He is sorry. He gives the hat back.
The fox smiles. He pats the squirrel. "Thank you," he says. The squirrel smiles. They hop home. The duck walks with them. The sun says goodbye. The fox puts on his hat. All is calm. All is safe.
