Four children—Mia, about 6, brown hair in pigtails, red jacket and yellow boots, sitting center placing a large red leaf on the grass; Sam, about 7, short black hair, brown sweater and khaki pants, standing left, pressing a brown leaf with his foot and laughing; Noor, about 6, dark curly hair, yellow coat, sitting right holding a yellow leaf and smiling; Lina, about 6, loose black hair, small green coat, slightly behind right, shy but smiling, showing a shiny yellow leaf—are in an autumn park under a large textured-branched tree with a carpet of red, orange and yellow leaves and green grass, bathed in soft low sunlight. They sit in a circle assembling their leaves into a large colorful sun; the mood is warm, leaves glint lightly, bits of leaf dust float, and a small squirrel on a branch watches. report a problem with this image

The wind outside was soft and cool. Red and orange leaves danced across the little street. Three friends, Mia, Sam, and Noor, put on their warm jackets and boots. They were ready for an autumn day together.

Mia said, “Let's go outside and look for the prettiest leaf!” Sam smiled. “I want to find a shiny brown one.” Noor nodded. “Maybe we will find a yellow leaf too.”

Mia's grandma called, “Don't forget your hats!” The children giggled and put on their hats. They opened the door and felt a gentle breeze. Noor closed the door softly behind them so the warm air stayed inside. The house felt cozy, and the children felt safe.

Outside, the world was full of new colors. The leaves made soft crunches under their feet. “Crunch, crunch,” laughed Sam as he stepped on the leaves. Noor picked up a curly red leaf and showed it to Mia. “Look, it's so red!” Noor said. Mia smiled and put the leaf in her pocket.

Just then, a new child came down the street. Her name was Lina. She wore a green coat and looked a little shy. Mia waved and said, “Hello! Do you want to look for leaves with us?” Lina's eyes grew bright. “Yes, please,” she said in a small voice.

Sam gave Lina a big smile. “We are finding pretty leaves,” he explained. Lina looked at the trees. She saw some leaves floating down. She reached out and caught a yellow one. “I found one!” she laughed. Noor clapped her hands. “That's a nice leaf!” Everyone smiled. The group felt warm with Lina there.

The friends walked to the big old tree in the park. Under the tree, the sun made patterns on the grass. The children sat down in a circle. They showed each other their leaves. Mia had a red leaf. Sam had a brown one. Noor had a yellow leaf. Lina had a bright yellow one too.

Lina looked at everyone. “I like being here,” she said. Sam nodded. “We like you here too.” The wind made the leaves swirl around them. They all laughed as a leaf landed on Mia's hat.

Mia looked at her friends. “Let's make a leaf picture!” she said. The children put their leaves on the grass. They made a sun shape with their leaves. Red, brown, yellow, and orange. It was a beautiful, happy sun.

A little squirrel watched from a branch. It twitched its nose. Noor waved to the squirrel. “Hello, little squirrel!” The squirrel ran away with a nut. The friends giggled.

It was getting chilly. The wind felt colder now. Noor hugged her arms. “Maybe we should go inside,” she said. Mia nodded. “Let's go. We can drink warm cocoa. Lina smiled. “Can I come too?” she asked. “Of course,” said Sam.

They walked back to Mia's house. The sky was soft and gray. The children walked slowly, crunching through the leaves. They felt happy to be together.

At the door, Mia remembered to close it gently, just like before. She turned the handle and softly shut the door behind them. Inside, the room felt warm and safe. The friends took off their boots and hats. Noor hung up Lina's coat with her own.

Mia's grandma brought mugs of warm cocoa. The sweet chocolate smell filled the room. The children sat together at the little table. Outside, the wind played with more leaves, but inside, it was quiet and cozy.

Lina looked around at her new friends. “Thank you for letting me play,” she said. Noor squeezed her hand. “You can play with us anytime,” Noor said. Sam nodded. “We are all friends here.”

Mia thought about the leaves and the soft wind. She felt happy inside. Autumn was changing the world outside, but inside, everything felt safe and warm. “I like autumn,” Mia whispered. “Me too,” said Noor. “Me too,” said Sam and Lina together.

The friends finished their cocoa. The soft light from the window made golden shapes on the wall. The children felt calm and peaceful.

Mia's grandma smiled at them. “Autumn is for sharing and making new friends,” she said. The children nodded. They liked being together, warm and happy, as the world changed outside.

The day ended softly. The friends curled up on the big couch, watching the leaves float past the window. The house was quiet and full of gentle light. The children closed their eyes and felt safe, knowing that autumn was full of little wonders and big smiles, and that friends made everything brighter.
