Tommy was a little boy. He was one year old. Tommy loved playing all day. But when it got dark, Tommy felt a little scared.
One night, Tommy said, "Mommy, the dark is big." Mommy smiled and hugged Tommy. "The dark is just night," she said softly. "It's like a soft, cozy blanket."
Tommy nodded, but he still felt unsure. Daddy came in. "Tommy," Daddy said, "let's see the stars." They looked out the window. "Twinkle, twinkle," Daddy sang. Tommy smiled. The stars were like little night lights in the sky.
Later, Tommy said, "But it's still dark here." Mommy turned on a small lamp. "There, a friendly light," she said. Tommy watched the gentle glow and felt a bit better.
Tommy wanted to be brave. He whispered, "Hello, darkness!" The room was quiet. It wasn't so scary now. Mommy and Daddy sat with Tommy. They read a story together. The story was happy and fun. Tommy felt warm and loved.
Mommy said, "When you feel scared, take a deep breath, like this." She showed Tommy how. "Whooo," went Tommy, breathing deep. It felt nice.
After the story, Tommy felt sleepy. "Night-night, stars," he said. "Goodnight, little light." Mommy and Daddy kissed Tommy goodnight.
Tommy snuggled in his bed. The dark was not so big anymore. It was friendly and calm. Tommy closed his eyes. He dreamed of stars and light, feeling safe and happy.
