Lucy is a little girl. Lucy is two. Lucy does not like the dark.

"Mommy, it's dark!" says Lucy. "Yes, sweetie," says Mommy. "But dark is nice."

Lucy looks around. "I can't see," says Lucy. "Look, Lucy," says Daddy. "See the stars?"

Lucy looks up. Stars are bright. "Stars are pretty," says Lucy. "Yes," says Daddy. "Stars are friends."

Lucy listens. "What is that?" she asks. "It's the wind," says Mommy. "The wind sings."

Lucy hears more. "And that?" Lucy asks. "It's an owl," says Daddy. "The owl says, 'Whoo'."

Lucy smiles. "Whoo," she says. "Yes, Lucy," says Mommy. "The owl is happy."

Lucy feels soft fur. "Who is this?" Lucy asks. "It's Teddy," says Daddy. "Teddy is here."

Lucy hugs Teddy. "Teddy is soft," says Lucy. "Yes," says Mommy. "Teddy keeps you safe."

Lucy yawns. "I like the stars," says Lucy. "I like the owl. I like Teddy."

Mommy and Daddy smile. "The dark is not scary," says Daddy. "The dark is nice," says Mommy.

Lucy closes her eyes. Lucy feels happy. Lucy feels safe. "Goodnight, stars," says Lucy. "Goodnight, owl. Goodnight, Teddy."

"Goodnight, Lucy," say Mommy and Daddy. Lucy sleeps. The dark is her friend.
