Three 4-year-old boys in a warm nighttime living room perform a tender New Year ritual: a blond boy in blue star pajamas stands center before a window with hands on his heart and a gentle smile, a curly brown-haired boy in red-and-white striped pajamas stands left blowing upward as if sending a wish, and a straight chestnut-haired boy in green moon pajamas stands right, lightly hopping on tiptoe with arms open for a hug; the scene is lit in soft golden light on a cream rug, a small table holds apple juice and pancakes, a small decorated table tree with warm yellow lights and closed blue curtains frame a large window showing distant sparkling fireworks, faces round with bright eyes, warm colors, soft textures, and a calm, festive atmosphere. report a problem with this image

Part 1

Leo, Max, and Sam were three little boys, almost four. They wore soft pajamas with stars and stripes. Outside the window, the sky looked dark and shiny, like a big blanket.

In the living room, Mommy put tiny paper hats on the table. Daddy set out cups of warm apple juice. The clock went tick-tock, tick-tock, like it was tiptoeing to the New Year.

“We will stay up a little,” Mommy said. “Just a little.”

Leo bounced on the rug. “I want a New Year thing!” he said. “A special thing we do.”

Max clapped. “A thing! A thing!”

Sam held a shiny spoon like a microphone. “Hello, New Year!” he said in a silly voice.

Leo looked at the lights on the small tree. The lights blinked. Blink-blink. They felt like tiny winks.

“I have an idea,” Leo said, very serious, like a small captain. “We make wishes with seven moves. Seven!”

“Seven?” Daddy asked. “That sounds like a magic number.”

“It is,” Leo whispered. “But not scary magic. Happy magic.”

Mommy smiled. “Show us your seven moves, Leo.”

Leo stood up tall. Max and Sam stood too. They made a little line, like ducks.

“First move,” Leo said. “We put our hands on our hearts. Like this.”

All three boys pressed their hands to their chests. Thump-thump. Warm-thump.

“Second move,” Leo said. “We look at someone we love and smile.”

Leo smiled at Max. Max smiled back, big and bright. Sam smiled at Mommy, and Mommy smiled right back.

“Third move,” Leo said. “We make our wish in our heads. A quiet wish. Shhh.”

The room got quiet for a tiny moment. Even the clock seemed to listen.

“Fourth move,” Leo said, “we blow the wish up to the sky.” He puffed his cheeks and blew gently. “Whooo.”

Max blew too. Sam blew so softly his hair moved a little.

“Fifth move,” Leo said, “we do a tiny jump for joy. A tiny jump!”

Boing! Boing! Three little jumps. The rug went soft under their feet.

“Sixth move,” Leo said, “we give a cuddle. He opened his arms wide.

Max ran into Leo. Sam squeezed Daddy's leg. Daddy bent down and hugged him close.

“Seventh move,” Leo said, “we say: ‘Hello, New Year!' together.”

The boys practiced. “Hello, New Year!” they said. Then again, because it felt good. “Hello, New Year!”

Mommy laughed softly. “That is a wonderful ritual.

“And it has seven,” Max said, holding up five fingers, then adding two more with his other hand, carefully.

Sam nodded. “Seven is big.”

Part 2

Soon the kitchen smelled like warm pancakes. Daddy flipped one. “Plop!” it landed on a plate.

“This is our New Year supper,” Daddy said. “Breakfast at night!”

“Yay!” said the boys.

They ate and talked and giggled. The paper hats went on. The hats slid off. They put them on again. On, off, on. It was a funny game.

Then Mommy brought a small bowl with seven shiny grapes.

“Seven grapes,” she said. “One for each move.”

Leo's eyes grew round. “Grapes for wishes!”

Max whispered, “Purple wishes.”

Sam whispered, “Squishy wishes.”

They sat by the window. Outside, far away, small lights blinked in the town. Not loud. Just twinkle, twinkle.

Daddy pointed at the clock. “Almost time.”

Leo took a deep breath, like a tiny lion trying to be brave in a gentle way. “Okay. Everyone ready.”

Max wiggled. Sam yawned, but he smiled too.

The clock went tick-tock, tick-tock, then tick… tick… tick…

Daddy said, “Here it comes.”

Part 3

Leo lifted his hands. “Seven moves!” he said.

First, hands on hearts. Warm-thump.

Second, look and smile. Smiles all around, like little lanterns.

Third, quiet wish. Shhh. Leo wished for more giggles. Max wished for more pancakes. Sam wished for more hugs.

Fourth, blow the wish up. Whooo. Three gentle puffs.

Fifth, tiny jump for joy. Boing! Boing! Boing!

Sixth, cuddle. A pile of cuddles, soft and safe. Mommy's arms, Daddy's arms, boy arms, all together.

Seventh, together: “Hello, New Year!”

“Hello, New Year!” they cheered.

Outside, a small sparkle popped in the sky. Just a little one, like a golden flower that opened and closed.

Max gasped. “It heard us!”

Sam pointed. “The sky is smiling!”

Mommy kissed Leo's hair. “Your ritual is full of joy,” she said. “We can do it every year.”

Leo felt his cheeks warm. “Every year,” he agreed.

Daddy handed each boy a grape. “A sweet finish,” he said.

They munched, and the clock kept going, calm and steady. Tick-tock, tick-tock, now in the New Year.

Soon, Max's eyes got heavy. Sam leaned on Daddy's shoulder. Leo yawned a big yawn that made everyone laugh.

Mommy carried a sleepy Max. Daddy carried a sleepy Sam. Leo walked between them, holding hands.

In bed, Leo whispered, “Good night, New Year.”

From the hall, Mommy whispered back, “Good night, joy.”

And in the quiet house, the wishes felt tucked in, safe and soft, ready to grow.
