Getting Ready for the New Year
Once upon a time, in a cozy little house at the end of a quiet street, there lived a small boy named Jack. Jack was three years old, and he was very excited. Tonight was New Year's Eve, and his family was coming over to celebrate.
The living room was filled with twinkling lights and colorful streamers. Balloons were bouncing here and there, like cheerful friends. Jack smiled as he watched Mommy put out shiny plates and Daddy hang a big, sparkly banner that said, “Happy New Year!”
“Is everyone coming soon?” Jack asked, hopping from one foot to the other.
“Yes, darling,” said Mommy with a warm smile. “We're going to have a wonderful time.”
Jack couldn't wait to see his grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, and cousin Lily. He loved spending time with them, especially when there were fun games and yummy treats.
The Special Sablier
As the clock ticked closer to midnight, Jack's family began to arrive. Grandma gave him a big hug, and Grandpa lifted him high in the air. “Look how big you've grown!” said Grandpa with a chuckle.
“Auntie!” Jack called, running to his aunt and cousin Lily. They joined hands and spun in circles, their laughter mixing with the soft music playing in the background.
Everyone was having so much fun that Jack almost forgot about the special surprise Daddy had talked about earlier. He remembered and tugged on Daddy's hand. “Daddy, is it time for the surprise?”
Daddy nodded and winked. “It's a little secret,” he said, leading everyone to the center of the room. He took out a small, magical-looking hourglass. The sand inside sparkled like tiny stars.
“This is our New Year's sablier,” Daddy explained. “When the sand runs out, it will be midnight, and a new year will begin.”
Jack's eyes widened with wonder. “Can I turn it over?” he asked.
“Of course,” Daddy replied, handing it to Jack. Carefully, Jack turned the hourglass over. The glittering sand started to flow, marking the countdown to the new year.
A Joyful Midnight
With the sand slipping through the sablier, everyone gathered around. Grandma told a funny story about when she was little, and Grandpa juggled three oranges, making everyone laugh.
“Ten more minutes!” Mommy announced, and the room buzzed with excitement.
As the last few grains of sand fell, Jack held his breath. Then, in a chorus, everyone began to count. “Five, four, three, two, one… Happy New Year!”
Cheers and hugs filled the room. Jack's heart felt full and happy as he hugged his cousin Lily tightly. “Happy New Year, Lily!” he exclaimed.
Lily giggled. “Happy New Year, Jack! Let's play our game now!”
Together, everyone joined in a game of musical chairs. Laughter rang through the house as they played. Even though Jack didn't win, he clapped and cheered for Lily when she got the last chair.
As they settled back on the couch, Mommy wrapped Jack in a warm blanket. “Did you have a good time, sweetheart?” she asked softly.
“Yes, Mommy,” Jack whispered, his eyes feeling sleepy. “It was the best New Year's ever.”
And as the soft glow of the new year filled the little house, Jack drifted off to sleep in Mommy's arms, dreaming of all the adventures that the new year would bring.
