A smiling woman captain holds a crumpled map, round face with freckles and brown hair in a ponytail, wearing a red navy jacket and pirate hat, looking in wonder at an open chest on the beach; a boy Jo, about 10, with tousled blond hair and a blue striped vest rows on the left of the small colorful wooden boat Sunny Shell (yellow and blue, white sails) and looks toward the island; a boy Pip, about 8, with short black hair and a green shirt drums on a pot and jumps on the deck near the captain; the tiny island has golden sand, a few bent palm trees, a light dissipating mist, and a wooden box with a large red bow; main scene: joyful discovery of the chest at low golden sun, bright colors, simple rounded shapes, calm cheerful mood. report a problem with this image

Captain Mira stood on her small ship, the Sunny Shell. The sea went swish, swish. Her crew were two silly pirates: Jo and Pip.

“Treasure day!” said Mira.

“Yo-ho!” said Jo. Pip beat a pot like a drum. Bong! Bong!

A map sat on a barrel. Mira tapped it. “We sail to Star Sand.”

The wind stopped. The sail hung down, soft and slow.

Pip blinked. “Uh-oh.”

Mira smiled. “No worry. We think.”

She looked at the sky. She looked at the sea. “Row time!” she said.

Jo and Pip took the oars. Splash, splash. Mira sang, “Row, row, row!”

Soon a tiny fog came. It was like milk in the air. The ship went slow.

“Left?” asked Jo.

Mira held a bell. Ding! “We listen,” she said. “Hear the gulls? They go to land.”

They rowed to the gull sounds. The fog slid away. A small isle popped up.

On the sand sat a box with a red bow. Pip giggled. “A gift!”

Mira opened it. Inside were gold coins and a warm note: “For brave, kind pirates.

They shared the coins, then shared biscuits too.
