Mia, Leo, and Sam are two years old. They wear soft coats and little hats. Outside, the air feels cool. It is autumn.
They walk with Dad to the small park. The trees are big. The leaves are red, yellow, and brown. A leaf falls. “Flip-flop,” it says.
Mia points. “Leaf!” she says.
Leo claps. “More!” he says.
Sam smiles. “Hi, tree,” he says.
Dad holds hands. “Slow steps,” Dad says. “We stay close.”
The kids step on crunchy leaves. “Crunch-crunch!” goes Leo's shoe.
Mia tries too. “Crunch!” she says, and giggles.
Sam jumps. “Hop!” he says. “Hop!”
Near the bench, Dad shows an acorn. It is smooth and small.
“Tap-tap,” Dad says, and taps it on the bench.
Mia touches it. “Tiny,” she says.
Leo puts it in Dad's hand. “Safe,” he says.
Sam nods. “Acorn,” he says.
A light wind comes. “Whooo,” it sings, soft and low. Leaves dance. The kids watch. Their eyes go wide, calm and happy.
Dad takes out a small bag. “We can pick five leaves,” Dad says.
“One,” says Mia. She picks a yellow leaf. “Soft.”
“Two,” says Leo. He picks a red leaf. “Pretty.”
“Three,” says Sam. He picks a brown leaf. “Big.”
“Four,” says Mia. “Round.”
“Five,” says Leo. “Wow.”
Then they sit on the bench. Dad gives them warm water in a cup. “Sip-sip,” says Sam.
Mia wipes her mouth. “Mmm,” she says.
Leo leans close. “Cozy,” he says.
They go home and wash hands. “Splash-splash,” says Mia.
On the table, Dad puts paper and glue. “Dot-dot,” says Dad.
The kids press leaves down. “Pat-pat,” says Leo.
Sam smooths one leaf. “Flat,” he says.
Soon the picture is full of autumn colors. They look at it and feel quiet.
At bedtime, Dad reads a short book. The kids cuddle. Outside, a leaf falls. “Flip-flop.”
Moral: Small steps and kind hands make autumn days safe, cozy, and happy.
