Sir Pip is an 8-year-old boy knight with a round face, calm smile and focused eyes, wearing a small shiny helmet, simple chainmail and a round red shield as he pulls a flag rope with both hands—having just undone a large knot—to hoist a red flag that begins to flap; nearby to his left Clip-Clop, a small cream-brown pony, neighs joyfully, while the queen, about 35, in a pale blue dress claps near the great hall and two guards in gray armor stand by the walls, raising their arms and smiling; the scene is a paved castle courtyard with chalky stone walls, a tall weathered wooden flagpole with knotted rope and a small moat water pit in the foreground, warm window light and a wisp of soup smoke rising from the castle; style: soft palette, watercolor textures, with white gel-pen highlights on metal reflections and fabric folds. report a problem with this image

Sir Pip was a brave knight. He rode a small pony, Clip-Clop, past the tall stone walls of the castle. His shiny helm sat neat on his head. His round shield was bright.

In the great hall, the kind Queen spoke. “Sir Pip,” she said, “our flag is down. The wind is soft, and the rope is stuck. Will you lift it up?”

“Yes,” said Sir Pip. “I will try!”

Sir Pip trotted to the high flag pole. He saw the rope twist in a knot. He took a slow breath. He looked close. He used his smart eyes.

First he pulled the rope. It would not move. So he tried a new way. He sat down. He made the knot loose with his small dagger. He went one loop, then two. The rope slid free.

“Good job,” said Clip-Clop.

Sir Pip tied the rope the right way. He pulled with both hands. Up went the flag, high in the sky. It flapped with a proud snap.

The guards cheered. The Queen clapped. “You are bold and kind,” she said.

Sir Pip bowed. He rode a lap by the moat, then came back for warm soup and bread.

Be brave, use your mind, and keep trying with a calm heart.
