Evening Walk
Mia and Ben put on small coats. The air is cool. Leaves crunch under their little boots. The moon is a thin smile in the sky. Shadows move like soft clouds.
"Look," says Mia. "Pumpkin lights!" She holds a tiny jack-o'-lantern lantern. It glows warm and orange. Ben claps his hands. "It is bright," he says.
They walk down the lane. They skip over puddles. They smell cinnamon and baked apples. The night is a little spooky. It is also kind. Owls say "hoo" far away. A breeze whispers, "whoosh."
They hear tiny steps. A little cat with shiny eyes peeks from behind a fence. A fuzzy bat hangs low on a branch. A small squirrel flutters its tail. They look a bit lost.
Mia shines her lantern. "Come," she says. "Follow my light." She takes Ben's hand. Ben smiles and leads the way too. They walk slowly. They walk carefully. They show the path.
A Little Light
The cat pads close. "Meow," it says. Its whiskers tickle Mia's glove. The bat flaps gently. "Eep," it says, which sounds like a tiny laugh. The squirrel chats with quick squeaks.
"Which way is home?" asks Ben.
Mia points the lantern. "This way," she says. The light makes soft shapes on the ground. It makes pumpkins look like friendly faces. It makes the leaves look like confetti.
They find a small bridge. The cat sits and watches the water sparkle. The bat looks shy. The squirrel sniffs the air. "We can help," says Mia. "We will show you the way."
They walk together. They sing a little song. "Light the way, light the way," they hum. The song is soft and silly. The bat twirls. The cat purrs. The squirrel hops.
At the next corner, a house glows with lanterns. A kind lady opens the door. "Come in, little ones," she says. She claps and gives everyone a tiny cookie shaped like a star. The cat nuzzles the lady's knee. The bat hangs on a safe string. The squirrel scurries up a tree to a small nest. All are safe.
Mia glows with pride. Ben gives her a peck on the cheek. "You showed the way," he says. Mia giggles. "We did it together," she says.
They wave goodbye. Their friends are home. The night feels calm and bright.
Cozy Nap
Back on the path, Mia and Ben walk slowly. The lantern is warm and sleepy. Their steps are small. Their eyes blink.
They find their favourite bench under a big maple tree. They sit close. Ben wraps his scarf around both of them. Mia yawns a big yawn.
"Good night, moon," Ben whispers.
"Good night, stars," Mia says.
They curl up. The leaves whisper a lullaby. The lantern hums softly. Mia and Ben drift into a cozy nap. The night watches over them. All is gentle and safe.
