Once upon a twinkly Halloween night, little Max put on his green dinosaur costume. He roared softly in the mirror. “Rawr!” he giggled. Max was just three, but tonight, he felt very big and very brave.
Outside, the moon was round and bright. Pumpkins smiled on every doorstep. Their eyes glowed gently, like warm night-lights. Max's mommy helped him with his tail. “There you go, little dino,” she said.
Max held his orange bucket tight. It looked like a happy pumpkin too. “Ready?” asked Mommy. Max nodded. “Ready!” he said.
They stepped outside. The air was cool and smelled like crunchy leaves. Max's friend Lily was waiting on the path. She was a sparkly fairy with shiny wings. “Hi Max!” she said, twirling. “Hi Lily!” said Max, waving his dino claws.
Just then, Max's cat, Shadow, ran past. Shadow wore a tiny witch hat. She meowed, “Meow!” and flicked her tail. Max laughed. “You're a witch-cat tonight!” he said.
“Let's go on our Halloween adventure!” said Lily.
They walked down the street, counting pumpkins and waving at friendly ghosts made of white sheets. “Ooo!” said Max, pretending to be spooky. “Boo!” said Lily, but she smiled.
Suddenly, Max saw something strange at the end of the street. There was a sparkly purple glow, right behind the big oak tree. “What's that?” Max asked.
Lily squeezed his hand. “Let's find out together!” she said.
They tiptoed closer. The purple glow was coming from a funny little door in the grass. It was shaped like a pumpkin, with a tiny golden handle. Shadow jumped on top and purred. “Meow-meow!” she said.
Max and Lily peeked inside. Behind the door was a tiny, swirly portal! It shimmered and twinkled, like a magic puddle. “Wow,” said Max. “It's a portal!”
Just then, a teeny-tiny ghost popped out. He wasn't scary at all. He looked a little lost. “Oh dear,” said the little ghost. “I'm supposed to go home, but I can't find the way.”
Max smiled at the ghost. “Don't be sad. We can help!” he said.
“Yes!” said Lily. “We'll help you close the portal and find your way home.”
The little ghost nodded. “Thank you! But the portal needs a magic word to close.”
Max thought hard. He remembered Mommy always said, “Please!” when she wanted something nice to happen.
“Let's all say the magic word together!” said Max. He held Lily's hand, and Lily held the ghost's hand, and Shadow curled around their feet.
They all said, “Please!” very kindly.
The portal sparkled brighter, then swirled shut with a happy pop! The little door closed. The little ghost smiled. “Thank you!” he said. “Now I can float home.”
Max felt proud. He had helped his new friend. The little ghost waved and disappeared into the night, twinkling like a tiny star.
Lily clapped. “You're the bravest dino ever, Max!” she said.
Max grinned. “And you're the sparkliest fairy!”
They skipped back to their houses, holding hands. Shadow trotted behind, her witch hat bobbing.
At home, Mommy gave Max a big hug. “Did you have a good adventure?” she asked.
Max nodded. “We closed the portal and helped a ghost!” he said.
Mommy smiled. “That's wonderful, Max. You're kind and brave.”
Max snuggled into bed, still wearing his dino tail. He felt happy and safe. Outside, the pumpkins kept smiling, and the moon shone bright. Halloween night was full of gentle magic, and everyone was welcome.
And Max, the little dinosaur, dreamed sweet dreams until morning.
