Mara stood in the ship bay. She was a grown-up, with calm eyes and warm hands. The small ship was round and bright. It was named Pip.
Mara tapped a screen. “Check air,” she said.
A soft voice replied, “Air is good.”
Mara smiled. She put on her light suit. It was like a snug coat. She held a small toy star in her pocket.
She looked at her tiny crew: a helper bot on wheels, Bee. Bee blinked blue lights.
“Ready, Bee?” Mara said.
“Ready,” Bee replied.
Mara sat in the seat. She buckled the belt. She pressed a green button. The ship hummed. A calm hum, like a purr.
“Lift in three,” said the ship. “Two. One.”
Up they went, slow and smooth. Clouds slid by. Then the sky turned dark and wide. Stars were all around, sharp and bright.
Mara spoke in a low voice. “We go to the Moon. We bring a new light tile for the Moon base.”
Bee rolled close. It held a small box. The box had a yellow tag.
Mara watched the gauges. “Speed good. Heat good,” she said.
A tiny beep sounded. The yellow tag on the box was loose.
“Oh,” Mara said. She reached out. Bee held still. Mara pressed the tag down. “There. Safe.”
Bee blinked. “Safe,” it said.
Soon the Moon filled the window, gray and kind. The base lights winked.
“Dock slow,” Mara said.
“Dock slow,” replied the ship.
Clunk. The ship held firm. Mara opened the door. Air whooshed in, soft and clean. Inside the base, it was warm.
Mara set the light tile in its spot. The hall grew bright. Bee spun in a happy circle.
Mara looked out at the stars again. “Big space,” she said, “and we can be gentle in it.”
Moral: Small careful steps can light up even the biggest journeys.
