A 4-year-old boy with a round face, rosy cheeks and bright, slightly wide eyes looks shy but brave as he holds a small yellow flashlight that lights his face; his mother, about 30, brown hair tied, sits on the bed edge smiling reassuringly with her hand on the blanket; a small beige teddy with a red ribbon sits on a chair nearby; the small cozy bedroom has pastel blue walls, a bookshelf, a star-patterned blanket and a sheer curtain through which tree branches cast a shadow; the boy lies in bed pointing the flashlight at the window, the warm light revealing that the frightening shadow is just the tree, creating a gentle nighttime atmosphere with friendly contrasts of light and shadow. report a problem with this image

Once upon a time, there was a little boy named Charlie. Charlie was four years old, and he had a big imagination. He loved playing outside during the day, running around with his friends, and exploring the garden. But when the sun went down and it was time for bed, Charlie felt a little scared.

Charlie wasn't sure why he felt this way. He just knew that when the lights went out, everything seemed a little different. The shadows in his room looked like big, strange creatures. He tried to be brave, but sometimes it was hard.

One evening, as Charlie was getting ready for bed, his mom said, "Charlie, tonight I have something special for you." She handed him a small flashlight. "This is your magic light," she said with a smile.

Charlie took the flashlight and smiled back. "What does it do?" he asked.

"It helps you see in the dark," his mom explained. "Whenever you feel scared, you can turn it on and see that everything is okay."

That night, after his mom tucked him in, Charlie lay in bed with his magic light beside him. The room was dark, but he wasn't alone. He had his magic light. He clicked it on and shined it around the room.

First, he saw his favorite teddy bear sitting on the chair. Teddy looked cozy and happy. Charlie giggled. "Hello, Teddy," he whispered.

Next, he pointed the light at the bookshelf. All his storybooks were there, just waiting for him to read them in the morning.

Then Charlie noticed the shadow by the window. It looked big and wiggly. He felt a little scared, but he remembered his mom's words. "I can try again," he said to himself.

He shined the light at the window. The shadow was only the tree outside, its branches swaying in the breeze. Charlie laughed. "It's just the tree!" he said. "Silly shadow!"

Feeling brave, Charlie turned off the flashlight. He took a deep breath, just like his mom had shown him. "In through the nose," he said, breathing in. "Out through the mouth," he said, breathing out.

Charlie felt calm and a little sleepy. He closed his eyes and thought about the fun he had that day. He remembered playing with his friends, his mom's warm hug, and the magic light that made everything alright.

The next morning, Charlie was excited to tell his mom about his night. "Mom, I used my magic light, and I wasn't scared!" he said proudly.

His mom hugged him tight. "You were very brave, Charlie," she said. "And remember, if you ever feel scared again, you can always use your magic light and take a big, calming breath."

Charlie nodded. He knew he could try again if he ever felt worried. With his magic light and his mom's love, he felt ready for anything.

From that day on, Charlie wasn't afraid of the dark. He knew the shadows were friendly, and his magic light was always there to help. And every night, he would take a deep breath, feeling calm and happy, ready for sweet dreams.

And so, Charlie learned that even when things seemed a little scary, he could be brave and try again. With a little light and a big breath, everything would be alright.
