“Mama, can I help today?” says little Sam.
“Yes, Sam. Let's go to the garden,” says Mama.
Sam puts on his hat.
Sam puts on his little shoes.
Sam is happy.
Mama is happy too.
“Look, Sam,” says Mama. “The sun is shining.”
“The flowers are pretty,” says Sam.
“Can I water them?”
“Yes, Sam. Here is your small watering can.”
Splash, splash!
Sam waters the flowers.
The flowers look happy.
“Can I pick up leaves?” asks Sam.
“Yes, Sam,” says Mama.
Rustle, rustle!
Sam picks up green leaves.
Sam puts them in the compost bin.
“The leaves will help the earth,” says Mama.
Sam smiles.
“Can we pick berries, Mama?”
“Yes, Sam. Let's pick red berries for our picnic.”
Plop, plop!
Sam puts berries in his basket.
Mama puts berries in her basket too.
“Thank you, Sam,” says Mama.
“You help the garden and you help me.”
After the garden, Sam sits with Mama and Papa on a big blanket.
“Picnic time!” says Papa.
Sam eats berries and bread.
Mama drinks tea.
The air smells sweet.
Birds sing in the trees.
Sam claps his hands.
“Tonight we will have a family walk,” says Mama.
“Will we see stars?” asks Sam.
“Yes, Sam. We will look at stars. We will listen to crickets.”
Sam hugs Mama.
Sam hugs Papa.
“I like summer,” says Sam.
“I like helping. I like family.”
Mama smiles.
Papa smiles.
“Summer is special,” says Mama.
“Summer is for helping, learning, and being together.”
Sam nods.
Sam feels happy.
Sam feels loved.
