Once upon a time, on a soft Christmas night, three little girls sat close by the fire. Their names were Mia, Lily, and Zoey. They were all two.
Outside, snow fell slow. “Hush, hush, snow,” sang the wind. Far away, bells went “ding-ding, ding-ding.” The tree stood tall. The candles shone warm. “Glow, glow, little light,” the room seemed to sing.
Mia clapped. “Ding-ding!” she said.
Lily hugged her teddy. “Glow!” she said.
Zoey bounced. “Hop, hop!” she said.
The three girls had one small job. They had a tiny star for the top of the tree. It was bright and neat, and it felt like a wish.
They tip-toed to the tree. Tip, tip, tip.
Mia held the star. Lily held a chair. Zoey held the candle cup, safe and still.
“Up,” said Mia.
“Up,” said Lily.
“Up,” said Zoey.
Mia tried to reach. Her arm was short. “Oh!” she said.
Lily tried to lift the star. “Oh!” she said.
Zoey tried to stand tall. “Oh!” she said.
Then the door went “toc-toc.” It was Grandma. She came in with a soft shawl and a warm smile.
“What is this, my sweet girls?” she said.
“Our star,” said Mia. “Up.”
Grandma nodded. “We do it all, all together.”
They all said it, like a song: “All together. All together.”
Grandma held the chair. Lily sat on it. Zoey gave the star to Lily. Mia held Lily's hand. Safe, safe, safe.
Lily placed the star. “Click,” it fit. The tree seemed to twinkle. The room felt like cocoa and hugs. Bells went “ding-ding.” Snow went “hush, hush.” Candles went “glow, glow.”
The girls danced slow, slow, slow. “Hop, hop,” said Zoey. “Ding-ding,” said Mia. “Glow,” said Lily.
They sat down, warm and calm, and the Christmas night felt sweet and still.
