Chapter 1: The Bakery Bustle

It was a bright Thursday afternoon, and the sweet smell of cinnamon buns floated down Maple Lane. Jamie and Mia, best friends and proud junior detectives, were on their way to their favorite place: Mr. Barlow's bakery.

Jamie's crutches clicked cheerfully on the sidewalk as Mia counted the coins in her palm. “We have enough for two chocolate croissants and a cinnamon swirl!” she announced with a grin.

Jamie's eyes sparkled. “And maybe, if we're lucky, Mr. Barlow will sneak us a cookie.”

Inside the bakery, it was warm and busy. The display cases were packed with golden pastries. Mr. Barlow himself—tall, flour-dusted, and always smiling—waved behind the counter. “Hello, detectives! What brings you here today, besides your rumbling tummies?”

“Just here for snacks and clues!” Jamie joked, winking at Mia.

But as they waited in line, something odd happened. Mrs. Finch, the music teacher, marched up to the counter, frowning. “Mr. Barlow, I ordered a dozen cherry tarts for tonight's concert, but they're missing! The box was on the shelf this morning, and now it's gone!”

Gasps and whispers rippled through the bakery. Mr. Barlow looked shocked. “That's impossible! I baked them myself and set them right here.”

Jamie and Mia exchanged a look. This was a real mystery. Mia nudged Jamie. “What do you think? Should we investigate?”

Jamie grinned. “Let's do it. Detective Agency, activate!”

Chapter 2: Clues and Crumbs

Jamie and Mia started their investigation the best way they knew—by observing. They watched Mr. Barlow search behind the counter, under the shelves, and even inside the big mixing bowl.

“Let's look for clues,” Mia whispered, pulling a tiny notepad from her backpack. “Where did you last see the tarts, Mr. Barlow?”

“They were right here.” He pointed to a high shelf behind the counter. “I put them up high so they'd be safe.”

Jamie squinted at the shelf. “Too high for kids to reach. Maybe an adult took them?”

Just then, the bell above the door jingled, and Benny, the delivery boy, rushed in. He was carrying a stack of flour sacks. “Sorry I'm late, Mr. B! The traffic was bonkers.”

Jamie's eyes narrowed. “Benny, did you see anything strange when you delivered the flour?”

Benny shook his head. “Nope. Well, except… when I came in, I heard a weird noise from the pantry. Like… munching.

Mia scribbled in her notepad. “A munching noise? Hmm.”

Jamie tapped her crutch thoughtfully. “Let's check the pantry.”

The pantry door creaked open. It was dark and cool inside, full of sugar bags and jam jars. But on the floor, there was a trail of bright red crumbs.

“Cherry tart crumbs!” Mia whispered. “Look, they go behind those boxes.”

Jamie followed the crumb trail, heart thumping. “Whoever took the tarts left a mess.”

Mia grinned. “Detective Agency, clue number one: the crumb trail!”

Chapter 3: Suspects and Suspicion

Back in the bakery, Jamie and Mia gathered suspects. Mr. Barlow, of course, was busy baking. Mrs. Finch was pacing, muttering about the concert. Benny, the delivery boy, was stacking flour. And in the corner, Mrs. Carter, the elderly neighbor, was sipping hot chocolate and nibbling a scone.

Jamie whispered, “Let's ask questions. Be casual.”

Mia nodded and approached Mrs. Carter. “Did you see anything strange this morning, Mrs. Carter?”

Mrs. Carter smiled. “Just Mr. Barlow humming to himself and Benny dropping a sack of flour. Why, is something wrong?”

“Just a small tart trouble,” Jamie said, smiling.

Next, they went to Benny. “Benny, when you heard the munching, did you see anyone come out?”

Benny scratched his head. “No, but I thought I saw a tail. Like, a fluffy brown tail.”

Mia's eyes widened. “A tail? Like a cat?”

“Maybe,” Benny said. “But it was quick.”

Jamie and Mia exchanged a look. “Detective Agency, clue number two: mystery tail spotted.”

Finally, they watched Mr. Barlow. He was busy icing cupcakes but kept glancing at the empty tart shelf.

Jamie whispered, “Let's check outside. Maybe the thief left more crumbs.”

Chapter 4: The Hidden Helper

Outside, the sun was sinking, and the street was golden. Jamie scanned the sidewalk for clues. Mia spotted a tiny paw print near the bakery's back door.

“Look!” she pointed. “Could it be…?”

Jamie knelt down. “It's too small for a dog. Maybe a squirrel?”

They followed the paw prints around the corner, past the garbage bins, and into the alley behind the bakery. There, on top of a stack of boxes, sat a chubby brown squirrel. It was licking cherry filling off its paws, surrounded by crumpled tart wrappers.

Mia gasped. “The thief!”

Jamie grinned. “Detective Agency, case cracked!”

Suddenly, the squirrel froze, eyes wide. Then, with a little squeak, it darted up a drainpipe, leaving behind one perfect cherry tart.

Mia giggled. “Guess he couldn't finish them all.”

Jamie carefully picked up the tart. “Let's bring this back as proof.”

Chapter 5: Piecing It Together

Back in the bakery, Jamie and Mia gathered everyone. “We have solved the mystery!” Jamie announced.

Mrs. Finch looked hopeful. Mr. Barlow folded his arms. “Well, detectives, what did you discover?”

Mia held up the tart. “The thief wasn't a person at all. It was a squirrel!”

Jamie nodded. “We followed a trail of crumbs and paw prints to the alley. The squirrel had a stash of tarts.”

Everyone burst out laughing. Even Mrs. Finch managed a smile. “A squirrel with a sweet tooth! Well, I never.”

Mr. Barlow chuckled. “That explains the tiny paw prints in the flour this morning. I thought I was seeing things.”

Benny shrugged. “Guess we need to squirrel-proof the bakery.”

Jamie grinned. “And maybe leave a tart or two for our hungry friend.”

Chapter 6: A Morning to Remember

The next day, the bakery was brighter than ever. Jamie and Mia arrived early, just as the sun peeked over the rooftops. The shelves were full of fresh tarts, and Mr. Barlow had put up a tiny sign: “Cherry Tarts—Now Squirrel-Proof!”

Mrs. Finch came in, smiling. “Thank you, detectives. The concert was a hit, even with fewer tarts. And I'll always remember the Great Squirrel Caper.”

Jamie looked at Mia and grinned. “Another case closed.”

Mia laughed. “Being patient and looking for clues really pays off.”

As they left the bakery, Jamie glanced up at the trees. A brown squirrel sat on a branch, munching a nut, and gave them a cheeky wink.

The morning was clear, the air smelled of pastries, and Jamie and Mia knew that with patience, teamwork, and a little curiosity, every day could hold a new adventure—even in the most familiar places.
