Chapter 1 – The Case of the Missing Marble
The school bell rang out across Maple Lane Primary School, and the playground filled with laughter and shouts. In the middle of the hustle stood Sam, his curly hair bouncing as he looked left and right. He wore his special coat with the too-big pockets—a true detective's coat, or at least that's what he called it.
Sam looked across the yard at his friends. There was Max, tall and serious with glasses that slipped down his nose; Jamie, who could run faster than anyone and almost never stopped grinning; and Toby, silent but sharp-eyed, chewing the end of his pencil as he always did when thinking.
Sam raised his hand, summoning the group. “Detective meeting! Urgent business!” he whispered as they gathered in a huddle near the big oak tree.
Jamie laughed. “What's the mystery, boss?”
Sam lowered his voice. “My marble is missing! Not just any marble—the blue streak. The lucky one.”
Max frowned. “You had it at lunch. You were showing it off by the swings.”
Sam nodded. “That's right. I put it in my pocket—this one.” He patted his left pocket, pulling it inside out to show the group. Only a piece of lint and a broken crayon emerged.
Toby's dark eyes narrowed. “Anyone else see you put it away?”
Sam shook his head. “I thought I was alone, but maybe I wasn't.”
Jamie leaned closer. “Maybe someone took it?”
“Or maybe you lost it,” Max pointed out, ever practical.
“Either way,” Sam announced, “we have a case to solve. Are you in?”
The other three nodded, eyes shining with excitement.
Chapter 2 – Clues in the Playground
They began their search near the swings. The grass was trampled and muddy from lunchtime games. Sam crouched low, scanning the ground. Jamie zig-zagged along the edge of the sandpit, eyes peeled.
Max adjusted his glasses. “Let's use logic. If Sam dropped it, it can't have rolled far.”
Toby pointed. “Look, footprints. Three sets by the swings—one with small feet, two bigger.” He followed the marks through the dirt as the others crowded behind.
Sam squinted. “That one's mine. Those big ones must be Daniel's—he's got the biggest shoes in Year 4.”
Jamie poked at something shiny in the dust, but it was just a bottle cap. “Let's ask Daniel!”
The group marched across the playground to where Daniel and his friend Ollie were playing catch.
“Daniel,” called Sam, “Did you see my blue marble? It's missing. We're investigating.”
Daniel shrugged. “Nope. I only saw you kneeling by the swings. Ollie was with me the whole time.”
Ollie nodded so hard his cap nearly fell off.
Max sighed. “Another dead end. Where else did you go?” he asked Sam.
Sam frowned, thinking. “I stopped at the bench to tie my shoe. Let's check it out!”
They hurried to the bench, noses almost to the ground. Jamie whooped. “Look!” He held up a small paper wrapper, but no marble.
Toby sat on the bench, lost in thought. “What if someone saw you drop it and picked it up?”
Sam felt a tingle of hope. “But who?”
Chapter 3 – The Mysterious Note
As they turned away from the bench, a piece of folded paper fluttered from under a leg. Toby grabbed it before the wind carried it away.
Max read aloud: “If you want to find what's lost, look below what stands tall. – D.”
Jamie clapped his hands. “A clue!”
Sam grinned. “Who's ‘D'? Daniel?”
Max shook his head. “But Daniel just said he didn't know anything. Maybe it stands for something else. What stands tall?”
Jamie pointed around. “The big oak tree?”
Sam nodded. “The tallest thing in the yard. Let's go!”
They dashed over to the old oak. Its roots twisted like sleeping snakes under the grass. Toby knelt down, running his hands along the roots and the earth beneath.
“Here!” Toby called. He pulled away some leaves, revealing a small hole at the base of the trunk.
Sam stuck his hand in and pulled out… not his marble, but a tiny plastic dinosaur.
The boys laughed.
Jamie grinned. “Wrong treasure!”
But Sam looked disappointed. “I wanted my marble, not a dinosaur.”
Max smiled. “Maybe there's another clue. D could stand for dinosaur.”
Just then, Jamie spotted something blue gleaming beside the dinosaur. “Wait!”
He dug in and pulled out a marble—red, not blue.
The boys now had two objects but not Sam's lucky marble.
Chapter 4 – Suspects and Surprises
The group sat under the oak, laying out the finds. “Somebody must be hiding things here,” Max reasoned. “We should ask around. Maybe there's a secret club or game.”
Toby nodded. “Let's look for anyone acting sneaky.”
At that moment, a giggle drifted from behind the equipment shed. Jamie crept over, motioning the others to follow. Behind the shed, they found Mia and Chloe, Year Three's most daring duo, crouched over a pile of shiny objects.
Sam gasped. In the pile was his blue streak marble!
“Hey!” Sam called out. “That's mine!”
Mia jumped. “We didn't steal it, honest! We found it near the sandpit.”
Chloe piped up. “We're looking for treasure for our club. We pick up shiny things and leave little notes.”
Max's eyes lit up. “So you left the clue!”
Mia nodded. “We knew someone would go looking. It's fun to make a mystery.”
Sam smiled. “Can I have my marble back?”
Chloe handed it over. “Of course! We didn't know it was special.”
Sam inspected his marble—blue and swirly, but with a bit of dirt. He wiped it clean, relief flooding him.
Toby grinned. “Case solved! The great treasure hunters return the treasure.”
Jamie bounced. “But next time, maybe leave a clue that's easier!”
The girls giggled and shrugged.
Chapter 5 – The Safety Plan
Sam tucked his marble safely into his coat pocket—this time, not the holey one.
Max said, “You know, it's easy for things to get lost in the playground, especially when everyone's running around.”
Sam nodded. “Maybe we should make a rule: if you find something shiny, check if someone lost it before keeping it.”
Jamie added, “And let's not hide things near the oak tree. Too many squirrels already do that!”
Toby, always practical, suggested, “We could ask Miss Carter to make a lost-and-found box for the playground. That way, everyone can check when they lose something.”
The group agreed. They marched up to Miss Carter, who smiled at their story and promised to put a bright red box near the benches.
Sam felt proud. Not only had they solved the case, but they'd made the playground a bit better for everyone.
As the bell rang for the end of recess, the boys high-fived and raced towards the doors, their detective coats flapping.
Chapter 6 – A Wink and a Whirl
The rest of the afternoon was quieter, but Sam felt lighter—his marble spinning in his pocket, his friends by his side. When the school day ended, the group gathered one last time under the oak.
Toby held up the little dinosaur. “This guy's still lost. Should we return him too?”
Sam laughed. “Or maybe he likes living under the oak!”
Jamie set the red marble next to the dinosaur at the base of the tree. “A present for any squirrel detectives.”
As the group walked home, Jamie grinned, “You think there'll be another mystery tomorrow, chief?”
Sam winked. “With friends like you? There's always a mystery waiting!”
They dissolved into laughter, skipping along the pavement as the last rays of sunlight made even ordinary things glow with adventure.
Behind them, under the great oak, the little dinosaur and the marbles gleamed quietly, waiting for the next curious investigator.
