Part 1
Pip the panda sat on a picnic blanket with a big sheet of paper. He held a fat green crayon like it was a magic wand.
“I am making a treasure hunt map,” Pip said.
Mila the mouse hopped closer. “Is it a cheese treasure?”
“Maybe,” Pip whispered. “But also… a surprise!”
Otto the otter rolled in with a giggle. “I love surprises. I once surprised myself with a sock.”
Bree the bunny bounced up and down. “Can I help? Can I help? Can I help?”
“Yes,” said Pip. “We all help.”
Pip drew a wiggly line. “This is the path.”
Mila pointed. “That looks like a noodle.”
“It is a path-noodle,” Pip said. “Very official.”
Otto leaned in. “Where is the X?”
Pip drew a big X. Then he drew another X. Then another.
Bree blinked. “So… which X is the treasure?”
Pip blinked back. “All of them? Or… one of them? Hm.”
Mila patted Pip's paw. “We can find out together.”
They all nodded. Together felt good.
Pip held up the map. “First clue: ‘Go to the Tall Tree and listen for a tickle.'”
Otto wiggled his whiskers. “A tickle? I am ready.”
Part 2
They marched to the Tall Tree. It was tall. Very tall. It wore leaves like a green hat.
They stood quiet.
Tickle-tickle-tickle.
Bree gasped. “The tree is laughing!”
Otto pressed his ear to the bark. “Nope. That is a beetle tap-dancing.”
Mila whispered, “Hello, tiny dancer.”
The beetle stopped. Then it tapped again. Tickle-tickle-tickle.
Pip read the next part of the map. “It says, ‘Follow the tap to the Snack Rock.'”
They followed the sound. It led to a smooth rock near the pond.
On the rock sat… a shiny acorn with a ribbon.
Bree clapped. “Treasure!”
Otto sniffed it. “It smells like… yesterday's picnic.”
Pip looked guilty. “I wrapped it.”
Mila smiled. “It is still treasure if it is shared.”
They split the acorn. It was full of crunchy seeds. Crunch, crunch, crunch.
Pip pointed at the map. “Next clue: ‘Find the Blue Bush with the Whoosh.'”
They ran to the berry bushes. One bush had blue berries. Pip waved his map like a flag.
“Blue bush! Blue bush!”
Otto whooshed his tail in the air. “Whoosh!”
Bree whooshed her ears. “Whoooosh!”
Mila whooshed a tiny whoosh. “^whoosh.”
Nothing happened.
Then the wind blew. WHOOSH!
Blue berries popped off the bush and rolled like marbles.
Otto slipped. “Wooaaah!” Plop! Right into a pile of soft leaves.
Bree laughed so hard she snorted. “Otto is a leaf sandwich!”
Mila giggled. “Two leaves, one otter.”
Pip tried to be serious, but his cheeks wobbled. “The map did not say ‘fall into leaves.'”
Otto sat up with a leaf on his nose. “The map is learning.”
They found a little wooden box under the bush. Inside were four silly hats: one tiny, one tall, one fluffy, one with a big ribbon.
They put them on.
Pip's hat was too tall. He waddled like a wobbly tower.
Mila's hat slid over her eyes. “I can't see my own whiskers!”
Bree's fluffy hat made her look like a dandelion.
Otto's ribbon hat made him bow every time he blinked. “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
They laughed and laughed.
Part 3
The last X was near the pond. Pip read the final clue slowly.
“‘Sit together. Look at the sky. Say thank you.'”
They sat on the blanket again. The day was soft now. The sun was orange like warm juice.
Bree whispered, “Thank you for hats.”
Otto said, “Thank you for leaves that catch otters.”
Mila said, “Thank you for sharing crunchy treasure.”
Pip looked at his friends. His voice was quiet and happy. “Thank you for helping with my silly map. I drew too many Xs.”
Mila nudged him. “Too many Xs means extra fun.”
Otto yawned. “And extra giggles.”
Bree leaned close. “What was the real treasure?”
Pip opened the wooden box again. At the bottom was a small note. He read it, careful and proud.
“‘Treasure is friends. Treasure is laughs. Treasure is saying thank you at night.'”
They all sighed, the good kind of sigh.
The pond made tiny plip-plip sounds. The hats sat in a happy pile. The map lay flat, like it was ready for dreams.
And together, very cozy and calm, they watched the sky get sleepy too.
