Part 1
Mia was three. Mia liked soft music.
In the playroom, she found her tiny music box. It was pink. It had a little moon on top.
Mia turned the knob. “Twinkle, twinkle,” went the gentle tune.
“Ahhh,” said Bunny, who was fluffy and brave. Bunny was a toy, but also a very good listener.
Teddy waddled over. “Music time?” he asked.
“Yes,” said Mia. “Soft music. Soft, soft, soft.”
Duck came too. Duck wore a little hat. Duck always had big ideas.
“I will help,” said Duck. “I will be the Music Boss!”
“You can be the Helper Boss,” Mia giggled. “I am the Music Boss.”
“Okay!” said Duck. “Helper Boss!”
Mia sat on the rug. “Let's make calm.”
Then—boing!—the music box did a funny thing. It made a tiny hiccup.
“Twink—HIC!—le.”
Mia blinked. Bunny blinked. Teddy blinked. Duck blinked very hard, like that would fix it.
“It sneezed,” Duck whispered.
“The music box sneezed?” Mia whispered back.
“Bless you, music,” said Teddy, very polite.
Mia turned the knob again. “Twink—HIC!—le, twink—HIC!—le…”
Mia giggled. “It is silly music!”
Bunny leaned close. “Maybe it wants a nap,” Bunny said.
Duck put his hat on tighter. “No naps! We need a plan. A Helper Boss plan!”
Mia patted the music box. “It's okay. We will help you,” she said softly.
Part 2
They tried gentle helping.
Teddy fanned the music box with a paper plate. “Cool breeze,” he said. “No more hiccups.”
Duck looked inside like a doctor. “Say ‘ahhh,' little box,” Duck said.
Mia tried too. She leaned in and said, “Ahhh!”
Bunny said, “Ahhh!” because Bunny liked to join.
The music box went, “Twink—HIC!—le.”
Duck nodded. “It is not listening.”
Mia thought hard. She made her thinking face. It was a small face, but it worked well.
“Maybe,” Mia said, “it wants… a soft song friend.”
“A friend song?” Teddy asked.
“Yes,” said Mia. “We can hum.”
So they hummed. Mia hummed low. “Mmmm.” Bunny hummed higher. “Mmm-mmm.” Teddy hummed slow. “Mmmmmmm.” Duck hummed very proud. “MMMM!”
Duck's hum was too loud. It made his hat wobble.
“Helper Boss,” Mia said, smiling, “soft.”
“Soft!” Duck whispered, and his whisper made him laugh. “I am a soft Duck.”
They hummed again. Soft, soft, soft.
The music box tried to join. “Twink… twink…”
No hiccup! Then—HIC!—a tiny one came back, like a shy bubble.
Mia giggled. “It's a baby hiccup.”
Teddy tapped the rug. “Maybe it needs a gentle bump?”
Bunny shook its head. “No bumps. Only hugs.”
Mia hugged the music box. “You can do it,” she told it. “We believe in you.”
Duck tried to hug too. His beak bonked the knob.
Boop!
The music box spun a little too fast. “TWINK-TWINK-TWINK!”
Everyone froze.
Then Mia burst out laughing. “It is dancing!”
Teddy laughed. Bunny laughed. Duck laughed so hard his hat fell off.
“Hat down!” Duck said. “Music up!”
Mia turned the knob slowly, slowly. “Soft,” she reminded.
“Soft,” said everyone, like a cozy secret.
Part 3
They made a new plan together.
Mia held the box steady.
Teddy held Duck's hat so it would not fall.
Bunny sat close, ready with a hug.
Duck counted in a whisper. “One… two… soft…”
Mia turned the knob just a tiny bit.
“Twinkle, twinkle,” the music box sang. Smooth. Sweet. No hiccup.
Mia's shoulders relaxed. “We did it.”
Duck nodded. “Helper Boss helped.”
“Yes,” Mia said. “Friends helped.”
They lay on the rug. The room felt warm and safe. The music was like a blanket made of sound.
Mia whispered, “If it hiccups again, we will laugh and help again.”
Teddy whispered, “Because we are a team.”
Bunny whispered, “Because we are kind.”
Duck whispered, “Because I am… a soft Duck,” and that made Mia giggle one last quiet giggle.
The music kept playing, soft and steady, while their laughs turned into smiles, and their smiles turned into calm.
