One cold winter evening, Lily sat on the soft rug in her warm, bright living room. She was three years old. Outside, the sky was dark, and snowflakes danced quietly down. The trees wore white hats, and the garden looked like a glittery blanket. Lily pressed her nose to the window. "Look, Mama!" she said. "It's all white and sparkly!"
Mama smiled and wrapped Lily in a cozy red sweater. "Winter is here, darling," Mama said softly. "The snow keeps the ground warm for the plants and gives us new things to see and do."
Lily hugged her favorite stuffed bunny. She felt safe and happy. She watched the snow fall, thinking about tomorrow. "Will I go to school in the snow?" she asked.
"Yes, you will," said Mama. "But first, let's get your backpack ready."
Lily liked helping. She found her little blue backpack. She put in her snack box, a soft hat, and her mittens. She added her water bottle and her picture book about animals. Mama helped her zip it up. "Well done, Lily!" Mama said, giving her a gentle hug.
Suddenly, Lily saw something moving outside. It was a small bird with brown feathers, hopping in the snow. "Look, Mama! A bird!" Lily pointed.
"Yes," said Mama. "Birds need food in winter, just like us. The snow makes it hard for them to find seeds."
Lily wanted to help. "Can we give the bird some food?" she asked.
"Of course," said Mama. Together, they put on their boots and coats. The snow felt soft under Lily's feet. The air was cold and crisp. She held Mama's hand.
They sprinkled some seeds on the ground. The bird hopped closer. Lily watched quietly. The bird pecked at the seeds. "He's eating!" Lily giggled.
"Yes," Mama whispered. "You are kind to help the bird. All animals need care, especially in winter."
Lily felt proud. She liked helping the little bird. She waved at it. "Good night, birdie. Sleep warm."
Back inside, Lily drank warm milk. She felt her cheeks tingle from the cold. She snuggled close to Mama and her bunny. The house was filled with soft lights and gentle sounds.
"Winter is cold outside," Lily said, "but it feels warm in here."
"It does," Mama said. "And tomorrow, you will see more winter magic. Maybe you'll help more animals, too."
Lily smiled. She thought about the snow, the bird, and her packed backpack. She felt ready for tomorrow. She knew she could be brave and kind, even when the world was snowy and new.
As Mama tucked her into bed, Lily looked out the window one more time. The snow still fell, soft and silent. She wondered what she would learn tomorrow. She closed her eyes, feeling safe, warm, and happy, knowing that winter was full of gentle surprises for her to discover.
