Toto the Turtle woke up with a big smile. “Today I make berry jam!” said Toto.
Pip the Puppy ran in. “I help!” said Pip.
Mimi the Mouse waved. “I help too!”
Coco the Cat purred. “I help a lot.”
Dodo the Duck flapped. “Quack, I help!”
They picked berries. Plop, plop, plop into a basket.
“We need a bowl,” said Toto.
“A ball?” said Pip, with a bounce.
“No, a bowl,” said Toto, and giggled.
Pip put the ball down. Pip got a bowl. “Bowl!” said Pip. They all laughed.
“We need a pan,” said Toto.
“A fan?” said Dodo, and flapped, flap flap!
The breeze felt nice. “Thank you, Dodo,” said Toto. “Now a pan.”
Coco brought a pan. “Pan!” said Coco. More little laughs.
“Stir, stir,” said Toto.
“Stir, stir,” sang the friends.
“Tap tap,” said Pip on the spoon.
“Tap tap,” Mimi said back.
“Oops, a drop,” said Coco.
Pip wiped it up. “All clean,” said Pip. Easy and fine.
The jam got warm. The jam got thick. It smelled sweet.
“Hot,” said Toto. “We wait.”
They sat. They hummed. “Hmm, hmm,” went the friends.
Dodo made a soft breeze. Flap, flap. Calm and nice.
At last, Toto said, “Jam time!”
They put jam on bread. Squish, spread, spread.
Mimi took a bite. “Yum!” said Mimi.
Pip took a bite. “Yum yum!”
Coco licked a dot. “Mmmm.”
Toto smiled. “Good jam. Good friends.”
“More?” said Dodo.
“Share,” said Toto.
They passed the bread. They passed the smiles. They passed the giggles too.
“Ha ha ha,” went Pip.
“Hee hee hee,” went Mimi.
“Quack giggle,” went Dodo.
They laughed and ate and felt warm and glad, and the day went soft and slow, and the air was quiet and sweet, and their eyes felt cozy, and all was calm.
Kind hands help and share, and that makes happy hearts.
