Three girls: Mia, 6, brown pigtails and a yellow polka-dot dress, crouched center plugging a lamp into the wall; Zoe, 5, short blonde hair in blue overalls and red shoes, left of Mia pressing the lamp button with a hopeful smile; Lila, 6, braided black hair in a light green sweater and pink skirt, kneeling on the right, watching and gently applauding. They are in a cozy bright living room with light wood floors, a cream speckled rug, a small light-wood table with a white porcelain lamp, a window with pastel striped curtains and a bookshelf in the background; the three little detectives examine the lamp as a soft light begins to glow and they share joyful, conspiratorial expressions. report a problem with this image

One sunny morning, three friends played together in Mia's cozy living room. Mia, Zoe, and Lila loved to play detectives. They wore their shiny detective hats and carried notepads. Mia said, “Let's find a mystery today!”

The girls looked around the room. The sun shone in, but one side was a little dark. “Why is it dim over here?” asked Lila. “It is supposed to be bright.” Zoe looked up and said, “The lamp is off!” Mia touched the lamp. “Maybe it is sleepy,” she giggled.

They all tried pressing the lamp's button. The lamp stayed quiet. “Is the lamp lost?” wondered Zoe. Mia shook her head. “Lamps can't walk away! Maybe it needs help.” “Let's check together,” said Lila.

Mia carefully peeked at the lamp's plug. “It's not in the wall!” she laughed. “That's funny. Lamps need to be plugged in!” Zoe gently pushed the plug into the wall. “Let's try again!”

Lila pressed the button. The lamp still did not shine. “Hmm,” said Mia, “maybe the bulb is tired. Zoe nodded. “We can help!” The friends asked Mia's mom, “Can you help us with the lamp?” Her mom smiled and showed them how to twist the bulb gently. “Let's see,” she said.

“Oh!” Lila clapped. “The bulb is loose!” Mia's mom turned the bulb until it clicked. Mia pressed the button, and—pop!—the light came on. The dark corner was now bright.

“We did it!” cheered Zoe. “We fixed the lamp together!” The girls danced in the sunny glow. Mia's mom gave them a big hug. “Great job, detectives!” she said.

The girls wrote in their notepads, “Lamp mystery solved.” Lila grinned. “Working together is fun!” Mia said, “We help each other and find clues!”

Zoe said, “Let's play more detective games!” The room was bright now, full of laughter and gentle light. The friends felt happy and proud.

As the sun moved across the sky, the girls played and giggled. The lamp shined all day. Together, Mia, Zoe, and Lila were the best detective team. Everything felt safe, warm, and just right.
