Little Wolf woke up with a question in his head. "Where did my blue mitten go?" he asked the morning sun.
He put on his detective hat. It was a small hat. It was a soft hat. He tapped his paw to his chin. "I will find it," he whispered.
He left his little cottage. The door closed with a soft click. The garden was bright. The flowers waved. Birds sang, "Tweet, tweet!" Little Wolf listened. He listened with his big, kind ears.
First, he looked by the big oak tree. He lifted a leaf. He found a shiny pebble. "Not the mitten," he said. He smiled and kept the pebble in his pocket.
Then he walked to the pond. The water was smooth. He looked at his own face. "Hello, Little Wolf," he said. "Do you know where my mitten is?" The wind replied with a ripple. The fish made a tiny splash. No mitten.
Little Wolf made a list. He wrote three clues in his head. One: small paw prints. Two: a bit of blue fur. Three: a sound—a soft echo.
An echo? Little Wolf's ears pricked up. He loved echoes. He liked to call, "Who is there?" and hear it say, "There!" back. That morning the echo had a new sound. It went, "Blue... blue... mitten?" He smiled. "An echo can help," he said.
He followed small paw prints. They were not his prints. They were tiny and careful. He found a scrap of blue fur on a twig. He touched it gently. "Good work," he said. He felt proud. He was being very careful. He looked at the twig with bright eyes.
Near the fence, his friend Bunny hopped by. "Hello, Little Wolf," Bunny said. "What are you doing?"
"I am looking for my blue mitten," Little Wolf said. "Have you seen it?"
Bunny's nose twitched. "I heard an echo near the hill," Bunny said. "It said, 'Blue... blue... mitten.'"
"Thank you!" said Little Wolf. "Will you help me?"
"Yes!" said Bunny. They walked together. Two friends are better than one.
Up the hill they went. The hill was soft and green. They stopped at a hollow rock. Little Wolf called, "Hello!" The hollow answered, "Hello!" Then it added, "Blue... blue..." Little Wolf's tail wagged. He listened close.
"Who lives by the hollow?" asked Bunny.
"Let's ask," said Little Wolf. They knocked on the hollow rock with a pebble. A small voice peeked out. It was Squirrel. She had shiny eyes and a bushy tail.
"Hello," Squirrel said. "Did you call?"
Little Wolf showed Squirrel the blue fur. "My mitten is missing," he said. "Have you seen it?"
Squirrel blinked. She pointed to the cave with her paw. "I heard a laugh near the cave," she said. "Then an echo said, 'Blue mitten.'"
"Thank you," said Little Wolf. He felt warmer. He liked how friends shared clues.
Down the path they went to the cave. The cave was cozy and small. Inside lived Owl. Owl blinked his big round eyes. "Who visits?" Owl asked kindly.
"It is Little Wolf," said Bunny. "We seek a blue mitten."
Owl hopped down and listened. He heard a soft echo. "Who is there?" he called. The cave answered, "There is a mitten!" The echo sounded happy.
"Let us look," said Owl. He and Little Wolf and Bunny moved slowly. They watched the floor. They watched the walls. Little Wolf saw a bit of blue under a log. He pulled. Click! Out tumbled a mitten and a tiny pile of berries.
"Oh!" Little Wolf laughed. "A berry hunt!"
Bunny giggled. Owl hooted softly. "A little mouse found your mitten," Owl said. "The mouse thought it was a cozy hat. The berries were a snack."
At that moment a small mouse peeked out. He was tiny and shy. "I am sorry," he squeaked. "I thought it was a hat. I left a snack. I will say sorry."
Little Wolf smiled. "Thank you for sharing," he said. "Would you like a berry? It's sweet."
The mouse nodded. He gave Little Wolf a tiny bow. "I will be careful next time," he whispered.
Little Wolf put on his mitten. It fit his paw. It was warm. He felt safe. He looked at his friends. "We did it," he said. "We listened. We looked. We helped."
Owl nodded. "You noticed small things," he said. "That is what makes a good detective."
Bunny hugged Little Wolf. Mouse handed him a berry. The echo in the cave sang, "Good job, good job, good job."
They walked home together. The sun smiled. The garden waved hello. Little Wolf kept the pebble in his pocket. He kept the memory of the day in his heart.
At bedtime Little Wolf put the mitten by his bed. He whispered, "Thank you, echo. Thank you, friends." The echo softly answered, "Thank you."
Little Wolf closed his eyes. He dreamed of small clues and kind friends. He dreamed of echoes that help us listen. He slept, calm and happy.
