Chapter 1: The Case of the Missing Carrots
Benny Bunny was not an ordinary rabbit. He was a detective. With a tiny blue hat that tilted over one ear and a notebook tucked under his arm, Benny was always ready for a new case. His nose twitched with excitement as he hopped around Willowwood, the friendliest animal village for miles.
One sunny morning, Benny was munching on his breakfast when his little sister, Bella, rushed in with wide eyes. “Benny! Someone's taken all the carrots from the rooftop garden!”
Benny's ears shot up. The rooftop garden was the pride of Willowwood Library, filled with crunchy carrots, sweet lettuce, and bright sunflowers. The garden sat atop the library's green roof, where animals could borrow books, nibble veggies, and watch clouds drift by.
“Don't worry, Bella. Detective Benny is on the case!” he declared. He grabbed his magnifying glass and dashed toward the library, with Bella close behind.
When they arrived, the garden was in chaos. Leaves were scattered, and the carrot patch was empty—except for a single, lonely carrot top lying on the soil.
Mrs. Hedgehog, the librarian, wrung her paws. “Oh dear, oh dear! We were going to make carrot soup for everyone tonight!”
Benny knelt to inspect the scene. He noticed pawprints in the soft dirt and a few nibbled lettuce leaves. Benny wrote in his notebook: “Possible clues: pawprints, chewed leaves, carrot tops. Who would take all the carrots?”
He turned to Bella. “Let's look for more clues. The thief can't be far!”
Chapter 2: Eavesdropping on a Clue
Benny hopped to the edge of the garden and peered over the low fence. Down below, two squirrels whispered by the library's back door.
“Shh! Be quiet, Nutty, or someone will hear us!” hissed one.
Benny's ears perked up. He tiptoed to the library's back entrance and pressed one long ear to the door. Bella crouched beside him, holding her breath.
Through the thick wooden door, Benny could just make out the conversation.
“I told you, we shouldn't have touched the carrots,” whispered Nutty. “Now everyone will be upset.”
“But we needed them for our surprise party,” said the other squirrel. “It's for a good cause!”
Benny's eyes sparkled. He turned to Bella and whispered, “I think we've found our suspects. The squirrels!”
Bella frowned, “But why would they take all the carrots? Squirrels don't even like carrots that much.”
Benny nodded. “Exactly. Something doesn't add up. Let's keep watching.”
They waited as the squirrels scurried away, carrying something wrapped in a big green leaf. Benny scribbled in his notebook: “Squirrels acting suspicious. Planning a surprise. But why carrots?”
Chapter 3: The Rooftop Stakeout
That afternoon, Benny and Bella returned to the rooftop garden. They hid behind a patch of tall sunflowers, their noses twitching. The sun felt warm on their fur, and the green roof buzzed with bees and fluttering butterflies.
Suddenly, a shadow darted across the patch. Benny peeked out and saw Mrs. Hedgehog tiptoeing towards the carrot patch, carrying a basket.
“Mrs. Hedgehog?” Benny whispered to Bella, “What is she up to?”
Mrs. Hedgehog knelt and began digging carefully in the dirt, humming softly. Benny watched as she unearthed a shiny, round stone and slipped it into her basket.
Benny's mind raced. “Could Mrs. Hedgehog be hiding something?”
Just then, a gust of wind blew, shaking the sunflowers. Benny sneezed. “Achoo!”
Mrs. Hedgehog spun around. “Who's there?”
Benny and Bella popped up, dusting off their fur. “It's just us, Mrs. Hedgehog. We're investigating the missing carrots.”
Mrs. Hedgehog smiled gently. “Oh, Benny, I was just collecting special stones for the library's garden path. I haven't seen the carrots since yesterday.”
Benny nodded, feeling a little embarrassed. “Sorry for spying, Mrs. Hedgehog. We just want to help.”
She patted Benny's shoulder. “That's very kind of you. Keep looking, detective!”
Chapter 4: A Trail of Orange
Back in the garden, Benny noticed something he hadn't seen before. Tiny bits of orange—carrot crumbs—led away from the patch and down the spiral staircase at the corner of the roof.
“Look, Bella! A trail!” he exclaimed.
They followed the crumbs down the steps, past the library's window, and along a row of flowerpots. The trail twisted and turned, finally stopping at the entrance to the community shed.
Benny pressed his ear to the shed door. Inside, he heard muffled voices and the sound of… giggling?
He motioned for Bella to be quiet and slowly opened the door. Inside, they found Nutty the squirrel and her friend Chippy, plus a few other animals, all busy decorating the shed with streamers and balloons.
In the middle of the room stood a big table covered with carrot cupcakes, carrot sandwiches, and even a carrot-shaped lantern.
“Surprise!” the animals shouted together, seeing Benny and Bella peek in.
Nutty blushed. “Oh! You found us! We were trying to keep it a secret.”
Benny grinned. “Were the carrots for a party?”
Chippy nodded. “Yes! It's Mrs. Hedgehog's birthday tomorrow, and we wanted to surprise her with a carrot feast. We didn't mean to worry anyone.”
Bella giggled. “No wonder you needed all those carrots!”
Benny looked around. “But why didn't you just ask to use them?”
Nutty's ears drooped. “We wanted it to be a surprise. But I guess we should have told Mrs. Hedgehog. Now everyone is upset.”
Benny thought for a moment. He remembered how sad Mrs. Hedgehog had looked in the garden. “I think we can fix things,” he said.
Chapter 5: Mending Mistakes
Benny gathered all the animals together. He explained what had happened, from the missing carrots to the secret party plan.
“I understand you wanted to do something nice for Mrs. Hedgehog,” Benny said, “but taking the carrots without asking worried everyone. Surprises are best when they make everyone happy—not worried.”
Nutty nodded. “You're right, Benny. We're sorry.”
Bella chimed in, “Maybe we can invite everyone to help prepare the party. That way, it will be even more special!”
The animals agreed. They decided to work together to fix things. Some ran to the gardens and picked fresh flowers for decorations. Others made carrot decorations out of paper and ribbons. Benny and Bella helped bake more carrot treats with Mrs. Hedgehog's favorite spices.
That evening, as the sun dipped low, the rooftop garden was transformed. Lanterns glowed softly, and the air was filled with laughter and the smell of fresh carrots.
When Mrs. Hedgehog arrived, she gasped in delight. “Oh my! What a wonderful surprise! And everyone is here!”
Nutty stepped forward. “We're sorry we took the carrots without asking. We wanted to make your birthday special.”
Mrs. Hedgehog hugged them. “Thank you, my dear friends. The best surprises are those we share together.”
Benny smiled, feeling proud. The case was solved, and the village was happy.

As the party went on, Benny sat with Bella under the twinkling lanterns on the soft, grass-covered roof. The sky was a deep blue, and the stars peeked out one by one.
“Good work, Detective Benny,” Bella whispered, munching on a carrot cupcake.
Benny grinned. “Thanks, partner. We solved the mystery together.”
The garden glowed in the gentle light. Friends danced, shared stories, and laughed until the moon shone high above. Benny looked around and felt warm inside—not just from the carrot soup, but from knowing that problems could be solved with honesty, kindness, and a little teamwork.
