The sun woke the windows of Sunny Meadow School. Little paws and hooves and claws arrived one by one. They smiled. They waved. They found seats.
Mrs Owl stood on a low branch. Her feathers were soft. Her glasses shone. She had a big chart on the wall. The chart had jobs. Line leader. Snack helper. Paint table. Toy tidy. Each job had a picture.
"Good morning," said Mrs Owl. "Today we will do our jobs."
Lila the hedgehog looked up. Lila loved to paint. She loved to build towers with blocks too. She saw the chart. Some jobs said "girls" next to them. Some jobs said "boys."
Max the mole blinked. Max liked to paint. Max liked to help with stories. Sam the squirrel liked to set the chairs. Sam liked to paint his nails and draw stars too. Little Ellie the elephant loved to sweep. She loved to help plant seeds.
Lila felt a small tug in her heart. She did not like to see jobs that stopped friends from trying new things. She raised her paw.
"Mrs Owl," said Lila, "may we try different jobs? Can everyone have a turn?"
Mrs Owl folded her wings. She smiled with wise eyes. "Why do you ask, Lila?"
"Because Max wants to paint," said Lila. "Because Sam likes to sweep. Because Ellie wants to lead the line. Everyone can learn," Lila said softly.
Mrs Owl nodded. "That is a kind thought. That is a fair thought. We must listen to one another."
Mrs Owl took down the old chart. She put up a new one. It was blank and bright. She drew a big sun on the top. "This week," she said, "we will share the jobs. We will try new things. We will be responsible for our tasks. We will help one another."
The animals clapped. They touched the sun on the chart. They smiled again. They chose jobs by pulling name-pebbles from a soft hat. Lila pulled a pebble for Max. Max pulled for Sam. Sam pulled for Ellie.
On Monday, Max painted. He painted a red apple. He painted a blue sky. He looked proud. His paint was gentle and careful. Lila clapped. Mrs Owl said, "Well done, Max. You are a good painter."
On Tuesday, Sam set the chairs. He arranged them straight. He hummed a little tune. He rested his tail and smiled. Ellie helped him. Together they made a neat circle. Mrs Owl said, "Thank you, Sam. You are very helpful."
On Wednesday, Ellie led the line to the garden. She lifted her trunk to open the little gate. The friends walked behind, one by one. Ellie walked steady and happy. Mrs Owl said, "Good job, Ellie. You are a calm leader."
Each day the friends tried something new. Sometimes a job was tricky. The paint spilled a small dot. The chairs wobbled. The gate stuck. But someone always helped. They learned to fix mistakes. They learned to say sorry and to say thank you.
Lila tried the block table and built a tall tower. Max watered the seeds and learned to be gentle. Sam tied a bow on a snack bag and laughed when it slipped. Ellie found a way to sweep with her trunk and sang as she worked.
At story time they sat in a circle. The sun on the chart shone in their eyes. They shared how they felt. "I liked trying," said Max. "I liked being trusted," said Sam. "I liked helping," said Ellie. "I liked learning," said Lila.
Mrs Owl tucked the chart into a pocket. "We are all different," she said. "We are all the same in trying. We share jobs. We share joy. We share care."
The friends yawned a little. They felt warm and safe. They felt proud. They knew they could try new things. They knew they could be responsible and kind.
Outside, the sky turned pink. Inside, the class whispered a soft song. Hands held hands. Paws touched paws. They drifted to rest, calm and happy, ready for another fair and bright day.
