Chapter 1: A Day at the Playground

Maya puts on her red shoes. "I am ready, Daddy!" she says with a big smile.

Daddy says, "Let's go, Maya! The playground is waiting."

At the playground, Maya sees a little boy. He has curly hair and shiny blue boots. His name is Sam.

"Hello, Sam," says Maya, waving her hand.

Sam waves too. "Hello, Maya! Do you want to play in the sand?"

"Yes, I love the sand," says Maya. "Let's build a big castle."

They sit in the soft sand together. Maya pats the sand with her small hands. Sam presses his bucket down. They make tall towers and dig a moat.

"I like building castles," says Maya.

"I like building castles too," says Sam.

Two older children walk by. One of them says, "Boys are strong builders. Girls like pretty things."

Maya looks at Sam. Sam looks at Maya.

Maya says, "I like building. I am a girl."

Sam says, "I like pretty things. I am a boy."

Daddy smiles. "You both can build and like pretty things. Everyone can do everything if they want."

Maya giggles. "I can build. Sam can build. We can all build."

Sam claps his hands. "Yes, we can build together!"

Chapter 2: Working Together

Maya finds a shiny blue shovel. Sam finds a red rake. They help each other.

Maya digs a big hole. Sam smooths the sand. "Good job, Maya!" says Sam.

"Thank you, Sam," says Maya. "You are a good helper."

A little girl comes to watch. She says, "Can I play too?"

Maya nods. "Yes! What do you like to do?"

The little girl smiles. "I like digging. I like making flags."

"You can do both," says Sam. "We can all do everything!"

They make a flag together. They put it on top of the castle.

Everyone cheers. "Hooray! We made it together!"

Daddy claps his hands. "You all worked together. That is wonderful."

Chapter 3: Learning and Sharing

When it is time to go home, Maya holds Sam's hand.

She says, "Today was a good day. We played and shared."

Sam nods. "I liked building with you, Maya."

Maya remembers the older children's words. She says, "Boys and girls can do anything. We can help each other. We can be friends."

Daddy smiles. "That's right, Maya. You are kind. You are smart. Everyone is special, no matter who they are."

Maya hugs Daddy. She hugs Sam too. "We are all friends. We are all helpers."

Sam smiles. "We are all builders. We all belong."

Maya claps her hands. "Tomorrow, let's build again!"

Daddy says, "Yes. Tomorrow, and every day, you can play, build, and help each other."

Maya skips home, thinking, "Everyone can do everything. We are strong when we work together."

And Maya feels happy, because every friend is special, and everyone is welcome.
