Part 1: The Plan
Milo the fox woke up with a big, bright idea. His whiskers wiggled. His tail made a happy swish. “Let's have a costume parade!” he said.
Mimi the fox blinked. “A parade?”
Max the fox sat up. “A fun parade?”
“A very fun parade,” said Milo. “We can march. We can dance. We can say ta-da! I will be the leader. I have a show hat.”
He opened a little box. Inside was a tall, shiny show hat. It was black and fancy. “Ta-da!” said Milo, and he put it on. The hat slid down, bonk, right over his eyes.
Mimi giggled. “You look like a walking hat!”
Max laughed. “Boop! Where did Milo go?”
Milo pushed the hat up. “I am here. I am the leader. Let's plan the parade.”
He clapped his paws. Clap, clap. “First, we make costumes. Next, we practice. Then, we parade around the room. We will go past the chair. We will go past the plant. We will go past Mama Fox. She will clap.”
Mimi nodded. “I want a twirly costume.”
Max nodded. “I want a superhero costume.”
Milo smiled. “I want a leader costume. I have the hat.”
Part 2: Costumes and Giggles
They looked in the costume basket. They looked under a blanket. They looked in the drawer. So many things! Scarves. Socks. A shiny ribbon. A big red oven mitt. A cardboard box.
Mimi held up a blue scarf. “Swish, swish. I am a twirly cloud!”
Max found a towel. He tied it on, very proud. “Whoosh! I am Super Max!”
Milo put on the show hat. He added the shiny ribbon. He added a paper star. “Ta-da! I am the Parade Leader!”
Mimi tilted her head. “Can I try the hat?”
Max tilted his head. “Can I try the hat, too?”
Milo hugged the hat. He liked the hat. It felt special. But he saw Mimi's big eyes. He saw Max's big smile. “We can take turns,” he said. “Leader hat time for me. Then Mimi. Then Max. Easy-peasy.”
Mimi smiled. “Thank you, Milo.”
Max nodded. “You are a kind leader.”
They made more costumes. Mimi put socks on her paws. One sock on her ear, by accident. “Oops!” she said, and giggled. “Ear sock!”
Max found the oven mitt. He put it on his paw. “I am Oven Mitt Captain!” he said. “Chomp, chomp!” He made the mitt talk. “Hello, I am a friendly mitt.” They all laughed.
Milo tried the cardboard box. It went boop over his tail. “I am a box fox!” he said. He wiggled. The box wiggled. Wiggle, wiggle. They laughed again.
“Let's practice,” said Milo. He tapped the floor with a spoon baton. Tap, tap. “Line up!”
They all tried to be first. “Me first!” said Mimi. “Me first!” said Max. “Leader first!” said Milo.
They bumped a little. Bump, bump. They stood still. They took a breath. In, out. Calm and happy.
Milo said, “We can be first in different ways. I will be first at marching. Mimi can be first at twirling. Max can be first at superhero flying. We can all be first!”
Mimi clapped. “I like that.”
Max jumped. “Me too!”
They practiced. March, march, march. Twirl, twirl, twirl. Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh. Mimi twirled so much she got a tiny wobble. “Ooo!” she said. Milo held her paw. “I've got you.” She smiled. “Thanks.”
Milo took off the hat and put it on Mimi. “Your turn, Mimi.” Mimi twirled in the hat. Swish! The shiny ribbon bounced. “Ta-da!” said Mimi.
Max said, “My turn?” Milo nodded and put the hat on Max. The hat slipped down. Bonk! Max peeked out. “I am the hat monster!” he said in a silly voice.
Mimi giggled. “Roar?” she asked.
Max shook his head. “No roar. Just snore.” He made a silly snore. “Honk-shoo!” They all laughed and laughed.
Part 3: The Parade and the Photo
Milo put the hat back on. “Now, it is parade time,” he said, very grand. He lifted his spoon baton. Tap, tap. “Places!”
They lined up. Milo the Leader. Mimi the Twirly Cloud. Max the Superhero with the friendly oven mitt.
“Ready?” asked Milo.
“Ready!” said Mimi.
“Ready!” said Max.
“Parade!” said Milo.
They marched past the chair. March, march. Mimi twirled past the plant. Twirl, twirl. Max whooshed past the rug. Whoosh, whoosh.
Mama Fox looked up. Her eyes were warm. Her smile was big. “Oh my,” she said. “What a show!”
Milo bowed. Mimi curtsied. Max struck a pose. The oven mitt waved. “Hello!” it said in Max's small voice.
They went around again. And again. Step, step, step. Spin, spin, spin. Zoom, zoom, zoom.
They made little parade sounds. “Pip! Pop! Ta-da!” said Milo. “Swish-swish!” said Mimi. “Ka-pow!” said Max, very soft and friendly.
They came to the couch. They stopped in a line. Milo whispered, “Finale.”
Mimi whispered, “Big twirl.”
Max whispered, “Super pose.”
“Three, two, one,” said Milo.
They did it together. Twirl! Pose! Bow! The oven mitt waved. The shiny ribbon bounced. The hat stayed on, just right.
Mama Fox clapped. Clap, clap, clap. “Wonderful!” she said. “Can we have a photo?”
“Yes!” said Milo.
“Yes!” said Mimi.
“Yes!” said Max.
They huddled close. Soft, soft. Warm, warm. Milo's hat tilted just a tiny bit. Mimi's sock-ear flopped. Max's towel-cape fluttered.
“Say cheese,” said Mama Fox.
“Cheese!” they all said.
Click!
Milo looked at his brother and sister. He felt happy and light. “Best parade,” he said.
“Best giggles,” said Mimi.
“Best hat,” said Max, and he booped the brim. Boop.
They gave a small cheer. “Yay!”
Then they sat together, cozy and calm. The hat sat on Milo's lap. The oven mitt sat on Max's paw. The blue scarf sat on Mimi's shoulder.
“We can do it again tomorrow,” whispered Milo.
“Tomorrow,” whispered Mimi.
“Tomorrow,” whispered Max.
They smiled. Quiet and bright. Cozy as a cuddle. And the shiny photo waited on the table, a sweet memory of their giggly, gentle parade.
