Mia is three years old. She wears a small hat and bright yellow boots. Today she is a detective. She loves to find things. She likes to help.

In the kitchen, Mia sees a small mystery. A cookie is missing from the plate. One cookie is gone. Mia frowns. "Oh!" she says. Her dog Pip wags his tail. Pip looks guilty. Pip always looks guilty when there is a crumb.

Mia puts on her gloves. They are soft gloves. She pulls them on one by one. "Gloves on," she says. The gloves make her feel ready. She feels calm. She feels clever.

Mia looks at the plate. There are crumbs. Big crumbs. Little crumbs. The crumbs make a trail. The trail goes to the living room. Mia follows. Pip follows too. Pip sniffs. Mia sniff-sniffs too. They move slowly. They move quiet.

On the rug, Mia finds a small paw print made of crumbs. It looks like Pip's paw. But the paw print is tiny. Mia thinks. She kneels down. She looks close. She touches the rug with a gloved finger. The rug feels soft.

"Who took the cookie?" Mia asks. She looks at the sofa. She looks at the chair. She looks at the toy box. She sees a teddy bear with a smile. The teddy bear has a nap. The teddy's mouth is a little crumb-shaped. Mia giggles.

Mia finds a ribbon on the floor. The ribbon has tiny chocolate smudges. The ribbon is blue. Mia remembers drawing with her friend Nora yesterday. Nora wore a blue ribbon. Mia thinks again. She asks Pip, "Was it you?" Pip barks once. He wags his tail. He looks at Mia like, "Maybe."

Mia stands. She breathes. She counts to three. One, two, three. She looks for more clues. Under the table is a small sock. The sock is warm. It smells like milk. Mia smiles. She remembers leaving a sock near the plate when she was playing. She sometimes hides cookies there.

Mia sits on the step. She puts her glove to her chin. She uses her words like tools. She says, "One crumb trail, blue ribbon, teddy with a smile, warm sock." She looks at Pip and then at the doorway. Outside, little footprints in the mud lead to the garden. Mia's boots have mud too. She checks her boots. They are clean. Pip's paws are clean. Mia tilts her head.

Mia goes to the window. She sees Nora at the fence. Nora waves. Nora holds a small packet. She looks shy. Mia opens the gate. Nora comes in. "I am sorry," Nora says. "I wanted cookie. I left a crumb trail by accident. I used my ribbon to tie it up. I put the rest in my pocket."

Mia feels her glove fingers relax. She smiles. She trusts Nora. She trusts Pip. She trusts herself too. Mia asks, "Do you want to share?" Nora nods. She looks relieved.

They wash their hands. They take off their gloves. Mia puts the gloves in a small box. She likes to keep them clean. Mia and Nora sit at the table. They put a napkin down and count cookies together. The missing cookie is not missing now. It is on Nora's plate. They all laugh.

Pip gets a small biscuit for helping. He wags his tail. Mia pats his head. "Good detective," she says softly. Mia feels warm inside. She solved the mystery with clues and kindness. She learned to ask, to look, and to trust.

The sun shines. The house is calm. Everyone is happy. Mia puts her gloves back on the hook, ready for the next small adventure.
