A Snowy Evening
Once upon a time, a little girl named Lily watched the snow fall. The snow looked like sugar on the roofs. The night was quiet and kind. From far away, bells said, “ding-ding.” In the windows, candles made soft golden moons. A tall green tree stood in the square, like a friendly giant with open arms.
“Soft snow falls. Ding-ding go the bells. The tree is green. The candles glow,” Lily whispered. She was three, small and bright, like a little star in a warm mitten.
Mama gave Lily a wool hat and a red scarf. “It is cold,” said Mama, smiling. “But we will be warm together.”
“I will hold on in the cold,” said Lily. “I will be brave and glad.”
She held a shiny paper star. It was light and bright, like a tiny sun.
The Little Walk
Hand in hand, Lily and Mama walked into the snowy night. The snow went hush-hush under their boots. The air felt like a peppermint kiss on Lily's nose. Her breath made little clouds. Her scarf was a hug around her chin.
“One step, two steps,” said Lily. “I can do it.”
“Soft snow falls. Ding-ding go the bells. The tree is green. The candles glow,” they sang together, slow and sweet.
A round robin hopped on a branch, red as a berry. “Hello, little bird,” said Lily. “Are you keeping warm?” The robin puffed up like a tiny ball of joy.
A small wind came and went, like a whispering friend. Lily pulled Mama's hand. “It is a little cold,” she said.
Mama bent down. “I am here,” she said gently. She tucked the scarf snug. “Warm as a cookie from the oven.”
Lily smiled. “I will hold on,” she said. She stood tall like a little tree. “One step, two steps.” The bells said, “ding-ding,” as if to cheer.
At the big green tree, lights blinked like sleepy fireflies. Lily lifted the star with Mama's help. “Up you go,” said Mama. Lily reached. The star found a branch. It shone like a happy thought.
“Soft snow falls. Ding-ding go the bells. The tree is green. The candles glow,” Lily sang. People nearby smiled. Joy felt like a warm coat for everyone.
Home and Light
They walked home, slow and safe. Inside, a candle flickered on the table. It was a small, calm sun. Mama poured warm milk. “You held on in the cold,” she said.
Lily sipped. The cup was cozy between her hands. “When we share our light,” she said softly, “we all feel warm.”
Mama kissed her forehead. The room was gentle and bright. Outside, the snow kept its quiet song.
“Soft snow falls. Ding-ding go the bells. The tree is green. The candles glow.”
Lily curled up, snug as a kitten. Her eyes grew heavy. Peace came like a blanket. And all was warm, and all was joy.
