Lila is four. She wears a red coat and a brave smile. This morning she is an investigator. She puts on a pretend badge. It is a sticker of a star. "I am Detective Lila," she says.

Outside, the sun is soft. The front garden smells like wet grass. Lila walks slow. She looks with her eyes. She listens with her ears. She uses her little notebook. The notebook has squiggles and a smiley face.

On the doorstep sits a parcel. It is big and brown. It has a bright blue ribbon. Lila kneels. She taps the parcel. "Hello, parcel," she says. The parcel is quiet.

Lila makes a plan. First, look. Second, ask. Third, help. She draws a circle in her notebook. She writes one word: LOOK.

She looks close. The parcel has stickers. There is a sticker with a red apple. There is a sticker with a tiny yellow boat. Lila points. "Nice stickers," she whispers. She wiggles her nose. She notices footprints in the mud nearby. Tiny shoe prints. They go to the garden gate.

"Who left you here?" Lila asks the parcel. She imagines a mailman with a hat. She imagines a cat with tiny paws. She imagines her neighbor Mr. Brown on his bike.

Next, Lila asks. She knocks on the door. Her mother opens. "What did you find, Lila?" her mother asks, warm and calm.

"A parcel on the doorstep," Lila says. "It has a blue ribbon and a boat sticker. Who is it for?"

Her mother looks. She smiles. "Let's look together," she says.

They read the label. The label is scribbly. The name looks like "Lila B." Lila claps. "Maybe it is for me!" she says. Her cheeks glow.

But the address has a funny line. There is a heart drawn under the name. Someone added a little sun. Lila is curious. She writes the second word in her notebook: ASK.

Lila walks to Mr. Brown's door. He is watering his flowers. "Hello, Mr. Brown," she says. "Did you bring a parcel?"

He wipes his hands on his apron. "No, little detective. I did not. But I saw a van with a friendly driver. He waved." He points up the street. "Maybe the driver made a mistake."

Lila nods. She twirls. She counts on her fingers. Three steps to the gate. Two steps to the path. One step back to her mother. She thinks of being responsible. She should not open the parcel without asking. She writes the third word in her notebook: ASK MUM.

Lila and her mother decide to call the parcel people. They make a call together. The voice on the phone is kind. "We will check," the voice says. "Please keep the parcel safe."

Lila hugs the parcel. It feels solid and warm. She sits on the doorstep like a guard. She watches for the delivery van. She hums a silly tune. Her cat, Pip, curls on her lap. Pip purrs like soft thunder.

A little while later, the delivery driver returns. He kneels and smiles. "Thank you for keeping it safe," he says to Lila. He shows his clipboard. He says the parcel was for Lila's friend, Nora. "The driver wrote the wrong house," he says.

Lila thinks. "We can help," she says. She pats the parcel. "Let's deliver with care." Her mother helps. They walk to Nora's house. Nora opens the door, surprised and happy. "My boat stickers!" she laughs. They share a snack on the step.

That night, Lila writes in her notebook. LOOK. ASK. HELP. She puts her sticker badge on the page. She learns something warm. Being curious is good. Asking is wise. Helping is kind.

Lila tucks the notebook under her pillow. She breathes slow. The house is quiet and safe. She dreams of solving kind little mysteries tomorrow.
