Morning in Bop City was fizzy and bright. Cars went vroom-vroom. Buses went beep-beep. Pigeons strutted like tiny dancers. An adult in a soft blue cape tied his sneakers. He was Captain Calm. He had very unusual powers. He could turn loud into gentle. He could turn hurry into happy. He could clap a beat, and feet would follow.
“Good day, city,” he said. “Let's keep it smooth.”
“WEE-OO! WEE-OO!” came a sound from Sprinkles Tower, the big shiny mall with a giant popcorn sign. Captain Calm did not panic. He took a deep breath. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. “We've got this,” he said.
On a bench, he spotted a funny little talkie-walkie with sparkly buttons. It blinked. It said, “Auto-Bloop Translator.” He pressed it.
“BZZZT!” said the world.
The talkie-walkie chirped, “Translation: Elevator is having a little nap.”
“Handy!” said Captain Calm.
“BOING!” went a shop ad.
“Translation: Trampoline sale. Very bouncy.”
Captain Calm smiled. “Let's roll.”
He reached Sprinkles Tower. People looked surprised, but okay. “BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!” sang the alarm.
The talkie-walkie said, “Translation: Please walk outside nicely.”
A mountain of popcorn was popping in the movie store. “POP-POP-POP!” It smelled buttery and silly.
A baker held a tray. A bus driver held a hat. A grandma held a small dog named Noodle. Noodle went, “Woof?”
The talkie-walkie said, “Translation: I can carry a sock.”
“Thank you, Noodle,” said Captain Calm. “But keep the sock. We will need it later.”
Captain Calm lifted his hands. He wiggled his fingers. He made the alarm sound softer. “Beep, beep,” it sang like a tiny chick.
“No rush,” he said. “We are a calm parade. We are the Pillow Parade!”
He clapped. “CLAP-CLAP … pause. CLAP-CLAP … slide.”
Little arrows of light floated on the floor. Left. Right. Slide. Wiggle. TA-DA!
“Follow the arrows,” he said. “Hold hands with your buddy.”
“I will hold Grandma!” said a child.
“I will hold the door,” said the bus driver.
“I will hold my cookies,” said the baker.
“Woof,” said Noodle.
“Translation: I will wag in rhythm,” said the talkie-walkie.
They moved like music. Step-step, slide. Step-step, slide. Shoes went shuff-shuff. A stroller went roll-roll. A skateboard went swish. Captain Calm tapped his knee. “Tap-tap,” he said. He made the floor feel like a smooth dance floor. He drew big smiley arrows in the air.
A pigeon with a tiny helmet landed on a sign. “Coo?”
“Translation: I will guide from above,” the talkie-walkie said.
“Thanks, Captain Coopup!” said Captain Calm.
At the elevator, people waited. “No squeeze,” said Captain Calm. “Stairs are that way. We go sloooow.”
“BONG!” went a shop clock.
“Translation: Time to breathe in, breathe out.”
Everyone breathed. In. Out. Shoulders dropped. Smiles popped.
Outside, they gathered in the sunny square. Popcorn drifted down like soft snow. Plop. Plop. Plop. Hats caught it. Hands caught it. Noodle caught one and said, “Mmh.”
“Translation: Delicious.”
The talkie-walkie blinked. “DING! All clear. Thank you.”
The mall manager waved. “You saved Movie Day!”
“We did it together,” said Captain Calm. “Teamwork is our superpower.”
“Teamwork!” cheered the crowd.
They made a little picnic. The baker shared cookies. The bus driver shared napkins. Captain Coopup shared air pecks. Captain Calm did a cool-down. “Shake your fingers. Shake your toes. Wiggle your nose.” Giggles everywhere.
“TA-DA!” said Captain Calm. He dusted one last popcorn from his cape. He looked up and gave a tiny, friendly wink to you, like a secret. Then he smiled even bigger and winked at the camera.
