Chapter One: The Library That Wriggles

Milly is three years old. She is very small and very clever. She sits at a big table in her room, looking at her homework. But today, Milly does not want to do homework. “Not today!” she says, shaking her head so hard that her curls bounce like tiny springs.

Suddenly, the room grows wobbly. The walls start to look like bookshelves. Milly blinks. Her chair turns into a stack of fat, squishy books. She is now in the Magical Library! The library is huge, with shelves that stretch up, up, up, and twist around like spaghetti.

Milly stands up. “No homework here!” she giggles. But then—BOOM! The bookshelves move. They slide left, then right, then upside down. The shelves change places every hour, just like a game of hide-and-seek.

Milly tiptoes between the shelves. She sees books flapping their covers like birds. Some books giggle. Some books sneeze out letters. “Achoo!” shouts a big green dictionary.

Suddenly, a little goblin pops out from behind a pile of rhyme books. He wears a floppy purple hat and carries a notebook with chewed corners.

“Hello, I am Gribble the Goblin!” he says. “I am a poet. I write poems, but nobody listens.”

Milly smiles. “I will listen!”

Gribble puffs up with pride and reads:

“Roses are blue,

Violets are cheese,

If you sneeze in the library,

You'll tickle your knees!”

Milly giggles. “That's very silly!”

Gribble nods. “Thank you. Not everyone likes my poems. Most people just run away.”

At that moment, a little witch appears. She is old, with twinkly eyes and a crooked hat. She looks worried. “Oh dear, oh dear! I can't find my glasses!” she says, patting her pockets and looking under her hat. “Without them, I can't read my spell books. My cat tried to help, but now he's tangled in yarn.”

Milly jumps up. “Don't worry! I will help you!”

Gribble grins. “And I will help too. Maybe I can write a poem about glasses!”

Chapter Two: The Wobbly Feather and the Silly Tournament

The three friends search together. They look under the tables, behind the dustiest books, and even inside a teapot that snorts lemon puffs.

Suddenly, Milly trips over something soft and ticklish. It is a feather, but not an ordinary feather. It is rainbow-colored and glows in the dark. As soon as Milly touches it, the feather jumps up and starts writing on a piece of paper all by itself!

“Oooh, a magic feather!” says Gribble. “Let's see what it writes!”

The feather scribbles: “Glesses in the soup. No, in the poop. Wait, in the loop?”

The words are all mixed up and very silly.

The witch giggles. “Oh, dear, I think my feather can write, but not very well.”

Milly laughs. “Maybe the feather can help us find your glasses—if we can guess what it means!”

Just as they are thinking very hard, a loud bell rings. A book with legs waddles up to them and shouts, “The Tournament of Finding Things will begin! The rules change every minute! Join in or you'll miss the soup round!”

Milly claps her hands. “That sounds fun!”

Gribble is excited. “I love games! I hope there's a poem round!”

The witch says, “Maybe someone in the tournament has seen my glasses!”

They run to the big hall. There are wizards, talking cats, and even a pancake with a mustache! The Tournament Master, a tall broom with a crown, waves its twigs. “Rule one: You must hop on one foot and look for glasses!”

So everyone hops. Milly giggles and hops. Gribble hops and writes poems at the same time. The witch hops and nearly loses her hat.

The bell rings again. “Rule two: Now you must sing everything you say!”

Milly sings, “Where are the glassesssss?” Gribble sings a rhyme about soup and noodles. The witch sings, “Oh, I wish I could see, la la la la la!”

Another ring! “Rule three: Now you must look only under things that are purple!”

Milly looks under a purple pillow. Gribble looks under his own purple hat. The witch looks under a purple book.

Suddenly, Milly finds a sparkly case. She opens it. Inside are the witch's glasses!

“I found them! Hooray!” Milly shouts.

Everyone cheers! The witch puts on her glasses and sees everything clearly again. “Thank you, Milly! Thank you, Gribble! You are both heroes!”

Chapter Three: Stars and Laughter

The Tournament Master cheers. “The winners are Milly, Gribble, and the witch!”

Suddenly, the sky in the library opens like a big blue curtain. Stars begin to fall, but these are not quiet stars. They bounce and giggle and wear silly hats. One star lands on Milly's nose and tells a joke: “Why did the book go to bed? Because it was feeling a little ‘cover-ed'!”

Everyone laughs so hard that even the bookshelves wiggle. The witch hugs Milly. Gribble bounces and recites his silliest poem yet, about stars with spaghetti arms.

The magical rain of stars fills the library with twinkles and giggles. The shelves stop moving. The books all settle down to listen to Gribble's poems.

Milly smiles. She feels warm and happy inside. She helped a friend, made a new friend, and didn't have to do any homework at all.

“I think being a hero is the best job ever,” Milly says.

The stars dance above, and everyone feels safe and loved. In the magical library, you never know what will happen next—but you always have friends to help you, and that is the best magic of all.
