Mila, Noor, Bea, and June held hands in a grassy meadow. They were a little band of friends. Their shoes were small. Their heads were full of sky. Today they looked for a hidden treasure. They had a map drawn with crayons. The map had a squiggle river and a bright dot.
"I smell flowers," said Mila. Her nose wriggled. The air smelled sweet and warm. The girls giggled. They walked toward the river. The river sang a soft song. "Shh," said Noor. "Listen." The river hummed like a lullaby.
At the river bank the girls saw pebbles that shone like tiny moons. The water tickled the stones. Bea put her toes in. "Brrr," she said, and then laughed. June cupped her hands and drank a cool sip. It tasted fresh and a little like mint. The river was gentle. It smelled like wet leaves and lemon.
They opened the crayon map. The bright dot was just under the river. "The treasure is under the river!" said Mila. The girls looked at each other. They felt brave and small. They felt brave and sure.
"No fear," said Noor. "We will be together." They built a small raft of sticks and a big leaf. The raft was wobble-wobble. They held tight. The raft floated. The wind patted their cheeks. The sun painted gold on the water.
They slid quietly. The river told stories with little ripples. A frog said "croak" and hopped on a lily. A duck paddled by and smiled with feathers like soft clouds. The girls clapped. They pressed their faces close to the water. They could see a shimmer below.
"Look!" said Bea. Small glints moved like tiny stars. The girls leaned over and saw a circle of pebbles that glowed. The river had hidden them under smooth sand. The stones hummed like bells. June reached her hand in. The water felt cool and kind.
Together they dug with soft hands. Sand slipped between their fingers. The sound was like rain on a roof. Under the sand they found a wooden box. The box was warm from the sun. It smelled of fresh wood and sweet sap. "Open it," whispered Mila.
Noor lifted the lid. Inside were things that danced. Not gold coins, but bright shells that chimed when you shook them. A feather that smelled like rain. A tiny painted mirror that showed the four friends smiling back. Little jars held giggles, tied with ribbon. The jars jingled when the girls moved.
"A real treasure!" said Bea. Their eyes grew big. The treasure was soft, singing, and full of wonder. They each took a piece. The shells sang a gentle tune. The feather tickled their noses. The mirror made them giggle at their own happy faces.
They shared the jars of giggles. They poured a little laugh into the air. The sound floated like bubbles and landed on the grass. Butterflies caught the bubbles and glittered.
They closed the box and put it back by the river. "We will come again," said June. The girls hugged. They felt brave. They felt clever. They felt kind. They knew the treasure was for everyone and for the river.
The raft returned to the meadow. The sun dipped low and the sky turned soft pink. Their mothers waved from the path, smiling. The girls told the story with bright words and louder giggles. That night, under warm blankets, they kept a shell by the bed. The shell hummed a tiny song. The song said, softly, "We are brave. We are together. The world is full of wonder."
