Chapter 1: The Case of the Vanishing Book
Elliott was not just any eight-year-old. He was the best detective in Willow Lane. At least, that's what he liked to tell his big sister. Today, Elliott was on a very important mission. He had borrowed his favourite book from the school library—“The Super Silly Animal Parade”—and he was going to return it, just like he'd promised Mrs. Puddle, the librarian.
But when Elliott opened his backpack, the book was gone!
He checked under his bed. He peeked inside his sock drawer (just in case). He even looked behind the cereal boxes in the kitchen. No book.
Elliott scratched his head and grinned at his reflection in the hallway mirror. “Time for Detective Elliott to solve the case!” he said.
There was only one clue: yesterday, he'd brought the book to the town fair. He remembered reading it while waiting for his turn on the merry-go-round. That was it! Maybe he'd left it at the fair.
Elliott grabbed his detective notebook, a pencil, and his favourite red cap. He waved goodbye to his mom and hurried down the street, feeling the springy excitement of a new case.
Chapter 2: The Clue at the Merry-Go-Round
The fair was still in town, and the smell of popcorn floated in the air. Elliott's shoes crunched over the gravel as he marched straight to the merry-go-round. He looked around. The big, smiling horses spun gently, and the music jingled in the background.
Elliott pulled out his notebook and wrote: “Last saw book near the blue horse.”
He walked around the ride, searching for any sign of his book. Suddenly, he spotted something shiny—a small security camera, perched high on the ticket booth.
“Cameras never forget,” Elliott whispered with a grin. He waved at the camera, just in case it was watching. Then he asked the ride operator, “Excuse me, did you see a book yesterday? It's called ‘The Super Silly Animal Parade.'”
The ride operator, a friendly lady with bright green glasses, shook her head. “I haven't seen it, but maybe someone else picked it up. Lots of children were here yesterday.”
Elliott thanked her and took notes: “Ask around. Check with friends.”
Just then, his best friend, Sam, rode up on his scooter. “Hey, Elliott! What are you doing?”
“I'm solving the Case of the Vanishing Book!” Elliott said. He explained about the missing book and the possible clue at the merry-go-round.
Sam scratched his chin. “I saw Mia with a book yesterday. She was near the apple stand. Maybe she knows something!”
Elliott's heart thumped with excitement. “Let's check it out!”
Chapter 3: Helpful Friends and Silly Suspects
Elliott and Sam hurried to the apple stand. Mia was nibbling a big red apple. She smiled when they arrived.
“Mia, did you find a book yesterday?” Elliott asked.
Mia's eyes widened. “Oh! I did find a book! I thought someone lost it, so I gave it to the Lost and Found tent.”
Elliott wrote in his notebook: “Book at Lost and Found?”
They thanked Mia and ran to the big striped tent near the entrance. Inside, boxes overflowed with hats, scarves, and even a rubber chicken.
Elliott spoke to Mr. Jolly, the man in charge of the Lost and Found. “Did anyone bring in a book called ‘The Super Silly Animal Parade'?”
Mr. Jolly laughed. “Lots of silly things come in here! Let's see…”
He searched through the boxes. There were rainbow mittens, a pirate hat, and a pair of squeaky shoes. But no book.
Elliott's shoulders drooped. “Maybe it's really lost,” he said softly.
Suddenly, Sam pointed. “Look, there's another camera in here!”
Elliott grinned. “Let's think like detectives! If Mia brought the book here, and it's not here now, maybe someone else picked it up.”
“Who would do that?” Sam wondered aloud.
Elliott thought about it. “Someone who likes funny books… or someone who wants to return it.”
Chapter 4: The Final Clue
Elliott decided to visit Mrs. Puddle at the library. Maybe she had seen the book.
The library was quiet and smelled like old paper and lemon soap. Mrs. Puddle waved from behind her desk. “Hello, Elliott! How's my favourite detective today?”
Elliott explained the mystery. Mrs. Puddle listened carefully, her eyes twinkling.
“Hmm,” she said. “Let's check the return box together.”
They walked to the big metal box where people returned their books after hours. Mrs. Puddle unlocked it and opened the lid. Inside, sitting on top of a pile of books, was “The Super Silly Animal Parade!”
Elliott gasped. “How did it get here?”
Mrs. Puddle smiled. “This morning, a boy named Ben found a book at the fair and brought it straight here. He said he wanted to make sure it got home safely.”
Elliott felt his cheeks warm with relief and happiness. He wrote in his notebook: “Case closed—thanks to teamwork!”
Chapter 5: A Happy Ending
Elliott handed the book to Mrs. Puddle. “Mystery solved! The book is home.”
Mrs. Puddle gave Elliott and Sam each a shiny sticker. “Great detective work, both of you! And remember, it's always good to help friends.”
Elliott and Sam grinned from ear to ear. As they left the library, Elliott waved at the security camera above the door and winked. “Thanks for keeping an eye out!”
On the walk home, Elliott said, “Every mystery is easier with friends. And cameras.”
Sam laughed. “And snacks!”
The two detectives skipped down Willow Lane, ready for their next adventure. The book was safe, the mystery was solved, and Elliott knew that even the smallest case could be a big adventure—with a little curiosity and a lot of teamwork.
