Chapter 1: The Missing Duck Race Ticket

It was a bright Saturday morning, and the sun sparkled on the water of Willow Canal. Four best friends—Maya, Jake, Olivia, and Ben—were walking along the towpath, chatting and laughing about the big Duck Race happening that afternoon.

Every year, the town held a race where hundreds of yellow rubber ducks floated down the canal. Each duck had a number, and every child got a ticket with a number too. If your duck won, you got a prize!

Maya stopped and checked her pocket. “Oh no!” she cried. “My Duck Race ticket is gone!”

Jake, always curious, knelt down. “Are you sure it was in your pocket?”

“I put it there right after breakfast!” Maya said, her eyes wide.

Olivia patted Maya's shoulder. “Don't worry. We'll help you find it. We're the Willow Canal Detectives, remember?”

Ben grinned. “Right! Let's look for clues. First, let's check where Maya has been since breakfast.”

Maya thought hard. “I walked from home, past Mrs. Berry's bakery, and then I met you all here by the canal.”

Jake took out his trusty notepad. “Let's split up and search along the path. If anyone sees something, shout!”

The four friends began their search, eyes sharp and minds whirring. The mystery of the missing ticket had begun.

Chapter 2: Clues by the Canal

Olivia walked carefully along the edge of the canal, peering at the grass and stones. She spotted a trail of tiny breadcrumbs. “Look!” she called. “Someone dropped a lot of crumbs here.”

Ben hurried over. “Was Maya eating anything?”

Maya shook her head. “No, but I did stop to watch the ducks.”

Jake studied the ground. “Maybe a bird took your ticket, thinking it was food?”

The friends giggled at the thought of a duck with a raffle ticket.

“Let's check near the water,” Ben suggested.

They tiptoed closer to the canal. Suddenly, Maya pointed. “What's that, under the bench?”

Jake knelt and found a crumpled piece of paper. He smoothed it out. “It's... just a shopping list.”

Olivia smiled. “Detective work is harder than I thought!”

Just then, a splash caught their attention. Over by the reeds, a family of ducks was paddling. One duck was pecking at something bright yellow floating near the edge.

“My ticket!” Maya shouted. She ran over, but the duck paddled away, leaving the ticket spinning in the water.

Ben grabbed a stick. “Careful! I'll try to reach it.”

He stretched out, but the ticket floated just out of reach.

Jake put his hands on his hips. “We need another idea. Let's think, detectives: how can we get the ticket without falling in?”

The friends paused, thinking hard.

Chapter 3: Detective Deduction

Olivia looked around. “What about using two sticks together? We could make a longer reach!”

Maya nodded. “Or maybe we can make a net with my scarf and a stick?”

Jake grinned. “Great thinking, both of you! Let's try the scarf idea first.”

Maya handed over her blue scarf. Ben and Jake tied it tightly to the end of the stick. Olivia held onto Maya, just in case someone slipped.

Ben gently dipped the scarf into the water, moving it under the ticket. “Almost... got it!”

The yellow ticket landed softly on the scarf. Maya cheered. “Hooray! You did it!”

Ben carefully lifted the scarf and handed the ticket to Maya, who checked the number. “It's mine! Thank you all!”

Jake wrote in his notepad: “Clue: Maya's ticket found floating in canal. Suspect: curious duck!”

The friends giggled again.

Olivia asked, “So, how did it get there?”

Maya thought. “Maybe when I stopped to watch the ducks, I leaned over, and it slipped out of my pocket.”

Ben nodded. “And the wind blew it into the water.”

Jake added, “Or maybe the duck really did try to eat it!”

Everyone laughed, but Maya was happy to have her ticket back.

Chapter 4: The Duck Race and a Happy Ending

With the mystery solved, the Willow Canal Detectives ran to the starting line. The canal was full of children and families, all holding their yellow tickets.

A whistle blew, and the rubber ducks were dropped into the water. The crowd cheered as the ducks bobbed and spun, racing down the canal. Maya watched her duck, number 82, float along with the others.

Jake nudged her. “Even if your duck doesn't win, you're the best detective I know.”

Olivia smiled. “We all are! We solved the mystery together.”

Ben grinned. “Next time, let's solve the Mystery of the Missing Ice Cream!”

Everyone laughed as the first duck crossed the finish line. Maya's duck didn't win, but she didn't mind. She was happy, surrounded by friends, with her ticket safe in her hand.

As the sun sparkled on the water, the four friends shared a big smile. Their curiosity and teamwork had turned a small problem into a grand adventure—and everyone knew that, with the Willow Canal Detectives, every day held a little bit of mystery and a whole lot of fun.
