Chapter 1: The Case of the Forgotten Bag

Elliot was not just any boy. He was a detective, and he paid close attention to every lost mitten, every lonely sock, and every pencil missing from the classroom. Today, Elliot had his magnifying glass in his pocket and his special blue notebook in his hand. He was ready for a new mystery.

At lunchtime, Mrs. Bloom, the friendly librarian, rushed into the hallway. “Oh dear!” she cried. “Someone left a brown bag in the reading corner, and I don't know who it belongs to.”

Elliot's eyes sparkled. “Don't worry, Mrs. Bloom. I'll help!” he said.

He walked over to the reading corner. The bag was small, with a red zipper and a little drawing of a cat. Elliot knelt down and opened his notebook.

“First clue: Brown bag, red zipper, cat drawing,” he whispered, writing everything down.

Elliot wanted to find the owner before the end of the school day. He looked around and saw some of his classmates reading or whispering quietly. Who could the bag belong to? He was determined to solve the case.

Chapter 2: The Search for Clues

Elliot started asking questions. He approached Mia, who was coloring with her best friend.

“Hi Mia! Did you leave a bag in the library?” asked Elliot.

Mia shook her head. “No, I only brought my backpack today. But I saw someone with a bag like that during story time.”

“Who was it?” Elliot asked.

Mia thought for a moment. “I think it was Max. He had a brown bag, but I'm not sure.”

Elliot thanked Mia and walked down the hall. He found Max near the art room. Max was carefully painting a yellow star.

“Excuse me, Max,” Elliot said kindly. “Did you leave your brown bag in the library?”

Max looked surprised. “Oh, I had a brown bag, but I gave it to someone else. I didn't go to the library today.”

“Who did you give it to?” Elliot asked, writing in his notebook.

Max smiled. “I gave it to Sophie. She wanted to borrow my crayons.”

Elliot nodded and headed toward the playground, where Sophie was skipping rope. As Elliot walked, he glanced at the big clock by the playground. He wanted to make sure he had enough time before school finished. The clock said 2:30. That meant he had only half an hour to find the owner.

Elliot hurried to Sophie. “Hi Sophie! Did you have Max's brown bag?”

Sophie nodded. “Yes, I borrowed it for my crayons, but I left it in the library by mistake. I'm sorry!”

Elliot smiled. “It's okay, Sophie. We all forget things sometimes. But whose bag is it really? Is it Max's?”

Sophie shook her head. “No, Max borrowed it from someone else. I think he got it from Sam.”

Elliot's list was getting longer. He checked his notebook and saw he had a mystery within a mystery. He needed to find Sam.

Chapter 3: The Polite Stranger and the Secret Message

Inside the lunchroom, Elliot saw a new face. A tall, polite boy stood by the window, watching the rain outside. Elliot had never seen him before.

“Hi, I'm Elliot. Are you Sam?” Elliot asked hopefully.

The boy turned and smiled. “Hello. I'm not Sam. My name is Ben. I'm new here. But I did see someone leave a bag in the library earlier.”

Elliot's eyes widened. “Did you see who it was?”

Ben nodded. “A boy with curly hair. He looked worried and left a note inside the bag.”

Elliot thanked Ben and ran back to the library. He opened the brown bag and, just as Ben said, there was a small piece of paper tucked inside. It had strange letters and numbers:

“C-3, P-1, L-2”

Elliot loved puzzles. He thought hard. What could the letters and numbers mean?

He guessed the letters might stand for colors: C for Crayon, P for Pencil, L for Lunchbox. The numbers could mean how many. But there was only one bag.

Elliot looked around the library. On a shelf, he saw three crayons, one pencil, and two lunchboxes lined up. Suddenly, he understood! The message was telling him to check the shelf.

He hurried over and found another note taped under a lunchbox. It said: “Thank you for helping me! I was afraid I'd lost my things, but now I know someone cares. – Sam.”

Just then, a boy with curly hair peeked around the corner. “Are you Elliot the detective?” he asked quietly.

Elliot nodded.

“I'm Sam. Thank you for finding my bag and my note. I was embarrassed that I forgot them, so I made a code to help me remember.”

Elliot smiled. “You don't need to be embarrassed, Sam. Everyone forgets things sometimes. Next time, just ask for help.”

Chapter 4: The Mystery Solved

Sam grinned and shook Elliot's hand. “You solved my mystery and my code!”

Elliot felt proud and happy. “It was a good code, Sam. And I had fun solving it.”

Mrs. Bloom came over and clapped her hands. “Wonderful work, Elliot! You really are a great detective.”

All the children gathered around. Elliot explained how he followed the clues, talked to everyone, and solved the code. Everyone listened closely, excited to help next time there was a mystery.

Elliot put away his notebook and magnifying glass. He knew that being a detective wasn't just about finding lost things. It was about helping people, being fair, and never giving up.

As the school bell rang, Sam waved goodbye with his brown bag. Elliot smiled, knowing justice had been done. And maybe, just maybe, there would be a new mystery tomorrow.

And if there was, Elliot the detective would be ready.
