Part 1: The Night of Costumes
It was almost Halloween, and the sky was turning orange and purple. Jamie, a five-year-old boy with big brown eyes, was already excited. At his house, cobweb decorations hung from the corners, and a friendly pumpkin smiled on the windowsill. Jamie loved Halloween. He loved the costumes, the sweet smell of candy, and the gentle, happy spooks that came with the night.
But this year, Jamie had a very special goal. He didn't just want to dress up. He wanted to paint the most amazing, festive face anyone on his street had ever seen! He wanted to make people smile and laugh, not just scream and hide. Jamie loved making others happy.
On the morning of Halloween, Jamie rushed to his room and peeked under his bed. There it was: a big box filled with costumes, hats, scarves, sparkly glasses, and—most important—his face paint. He opened the box, and a gentle whoosh of glitter escaped!
Jamie took out a small brush, a sponge, and a rainbow of paints. He looked at the colors for a long time, wondering what kind of face he should paint. Should he be a silly vampire with a wiggly mustache? Or maybe a colorful cat with bright pink eyebrows? He giggled at the thought.
Suddenly, Jamie heard a tiny knock on his door. It was his little sister, Lily. She was only three, with wild, curly hair and mismatched socks. Lily looked up at Jamie with big hopeful eyes. “Can you paint my face too?” she asked.
Jamie grinned. He loved helping. “Of course!” he said.
Part 2: A Mysterious Visitor
Jamie set to work, gently dabbing a little orange and a little green on Lily's cheeks. He painted a smiling pumpkin right on her nose, with twinkling eyes and a silly, crooked mouth. Lily giggled and danced, delighted. She looked like a tiny pumpkin fairy.
Soon, the doorbell rang. Jamie hurried to the door, careful not to smudge his paints. It was his neighbor, Mr. Wally, dressed as a jolly skeleton with a big bow tie. “Happy Halloween, Jamie!” he cheered. “Are you the face-painting wizard I've been hearing about?”
Jamie blushed, but nodded bravely. Mr. Wally knelt down and asked if he could have a spooky spider painted on his cheek. Jamie smiled and painted a wibbly-wobbly black spider, with friendly eyes and eight tiny legs. Mr. Wally looked in the mirror and laughed so hard his bones almost rattled!
Soon, word got around. One by one, Jamie's friends—Mia, Tom, and even old Mrs. Maple from next door—came to visit. Mia wanted a sparkly bat. Tom wanted a silly ghost with a pink tongue. Mrs. Maple wanted the shiniest star Jamie could manage. With every new friend, Jamie's paints mixed and swirled, making wonderful bright faces in the soft Halloween light.
But as the sun dipped lower, something odd happened. Jamie reached for the silver paint, but it was gone! He looked all around, but the silver jar had vanished. He checked under the table, behind the pumpkin, and even in Lily's pockets. No silver. Jamie's heart raced. How could he finish the special star on his own face without it?
Part 3: The Soft Halloween Mystery
Jamie wasn't scared. He knew Halloween was a night for little mysteries. Maybe the silver paint wanted a little adventure too! Jamie tried to think. He remembered what his mom always said: “When something is missing, sometimes you find something even better.”
Jamie closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He looked at his paints. There was gold, blue, purple, and green. Maybe his star didn't need to be silver. Maybe it could be golden, shining like the moon!
He dipped his brush into the gold paint and gently painted a star on his own cheek. It sparkled just right. When he finished, Jamie looked in the mirror and smiled. He had painted the happiest, brightest golden star. It was even better than silver.
Just then, Jamie heard soft giggles under the table. Lily peeked out, holding the missing silver paint in her tiny hands. “I wanted to make a magic moon!” she whispered, holding out a silver circle she'd painted on her own hand.
Jamie laughed, and everyone laughed too. “That's a lovely moon, Lily,” he said warmly.
Part 4: Kindness in the Moonlight
Night had finally come. Trick-or-treaters danced up and down the street. Laughter and the soft rustle of costumes filled the air. Jamie, with his golden star, and Lily, with her silvery moon, joined their friends. Everyone admired Jamie's work, and Jamie felt proud—not just of his own face, but of all the happy faces he'd painted.
As they walked home under the twinkling stars, Jamie remembered to say thank you to everyone who had come by. His friends thanked him, too. Jamie's heart felt as warm as pumpkin pie. He saw that sharing his colors and time had made the night magical for everyone.
Back at home, Jamie and Lily put away the paints and costumes together. Jamie closed the box, clicking the lid shut. He smiled, knowing the magical Halloween box would be waiting for next year—and maybe a few more happy mysteries.
As he curled up under his blanket, Jamie felt proud and peaceful. On Halloween night, a little kindness and a dab of paint could make the world sparkle, just like a golden star. And that was the best treat of all.
