Part One

Sunny the little fox woke up with a skip. Today was special. Today was Father's Day. The sun made the leaves look like gold coins. Sunny put on a tiny red scarf. She smiled. Her tail wagged.

“Good morning, Papa!” she sang.

Papa Fox stirred and opened one sleepy eye. He smelled warm bread. He smiled, too. “Good morning, Sunny,” he said. “What are you doing today?”

Sunny jumped up. “I am making a surprise!” she said. Her paws were quick. Her heart was full of brightness.

She made a list. Sunny tapped her paw on the paper. She wanted to make Papa smile all day. She thought about what she loved about him. She said each thing out loud.

“I love Papa because he is kind,” Sunny whispered. “He is funny. He is strong. He is warm. He is gentle. He is playful. He is patient. He is brave. He is helpful. He is clever.” She counted on her paws. Ten! Sunny beamed.

She packed a basket. Inside went soft berries, crunchy nuts, and a little hat she had made from a leaf. She tied a ribbon. The ribbon was wobbly and giggly. That made Sunny giggle.

Part Two

Sunny tiptoed through the garden. The garden smelled like mint and sun. She hummed a little tune. Then, plop! A puddle. Sunny stopped. The ribbon got wet.

“Oh no,” she said. Her tail drooped a tiny bit. The hat was soggy. Sunny sighed, then she smiled. “I can fix this,” she sang.

She dried the hat with a leaf. She shook the ribbon and it made a funny sound. Sunny laughed. She walked on.

Next, she wanted to pick flowers. The flowers were small and brave. Sunny reached for a blue daisy. A bee buzzed. “Bzz,” said the bee. Sunny froze. She did not like to scare the bee. She whispered, “Hello, Bee. I am making a gift.” The bee hummed and flew away. Sunny picked the daisy gently.

Then the basket caught on a branch. “Ouch!” said Sunny. The basket tipped. Berries rolled like little red moons. They bounced down the path. Sunny chased them. “Wait!” she called. The berries hopped into a hollow.

A squirrel popped out. “Hello!” he said. “Were those your berries?”

“Yes,” Sunny said. “Please may I have them back? They are for Papa.”

The squirrel looked at Sunny. He thought of his own nuts. He thought of sunny afternoons. He smiled and helped. Together they rolled the berries back. The squirrel even sang a silly song.

Sunny patted his head. “Thank you,” she said. The squirrel waved and ran up a tree. Sunny felt her cheeks warm.

Finally, Sunny reached Papa's favorite hill. The wind smelled like honey. She placed the hat, the berries, and the flowers in the basket. She put the ribbon on top. She blew a tiny trumpet made of grass. It made a soft, funny sound.

Papa Fox opened the door and blinked. His eyes were gentle. He smelled the berries. He smelled the love. “Sunny?” he asked.

“Surprise!” Sunny hopped. Her feet made soft thumps. Papa's whiskers twitched.

Papa bent down. He picked up the little leaf hat. He touched the soft ribbon. He tasted a berry and smiled wide. “Oh, Sunny,” he said, “this is the best surprise.

Sunny hugged him. He was warm like a hug from the sun. She looked at him and said each thing again. “Papa, you are kind. You are funny. You are strong. You are warm. You are gentle. You are playful. You are patient. You are brave. You are helpful. You are clever.” Papa laughed and wiped a berry from his whiskers.

Part Three

They sat on the hill. The sky was a big bowl of blue. A little cloud made a face and winked. Papa Fox put the leaf hat on his head. It looked very silly. Sunny giggled until she hiccupped.

“Tell me a story,” Sunny said.

Papa nodded. He told a gentle story about when Sunny was tiny and tried to catch the moon. Sunny listened. Her paws were folded. Her eyes were soft. She felt safe and proud.

After the story, Papa took Sunny's paw. “Thank you, little one,” he said. “This is the best Father's Day. You are my sunshine.”

They shared berries. They fed crumbs to the birds. A friendly robin hopped close and sang a short tune. Sunny taught the robin the ribbon song. It was a tiny, bouncy tune. The robin learned two notes. Papa clapped. The clapping made the leaves clap, too.

The day had a few more small surprises. A rain shower came. It was warm and quick. They danced under the little rain. Papa spun Sunny in a slow circle. Everyone laughed. The puddle that had worried Sunny earlier turned into a mirror. Sunny saw her smiling face. She waved.

As the sun went soft and sleepy, Papa tucked the leaf hat onto a branch like a crown. “A crown for my helper,” he said.

Sunny yawned. She felt happy and a little tired. Her heart was full of tiny lights. She snuggled close to Papa. He smelled of bread and warm leaves.

“Good night, Papa,” Sunny whispered.

“Good night, Sunny,” he said gently. “Thank you for today.”

They watched one bright star. The star blinked like a small wink. Sunny closed her eyes. She dreamed of ribbons, berries, and giggling bees. The world was calm. The day had been soft and sweet.

And in the morning, Sunny woke with a smile, ready to make another small surprise, because love lives in the little things.
