Three boys around six years old build a tall, slightly wobbly tower of colorful blocks on a soft pastel diamond rug in a bright, cozy living room: a brown-haired boy with a bowl cut, round cheeks, sky-blue t-shirt and orange shorts sits center applauding the tower; a blond boy with crew cut and freckles in a green polo and beige pants stands left adding a block with a focused face; a black-haired boy with a wide smile in a red sweatshirt stands right holding a large red ball he just rolled toward a teddy bear wearing a small party hat on the bed behind them. Sunlight streams through a window onto a striped throw and lined plush toys; blurred cupcakes and balloons suggest a birthday party. Today is Sam's birthday. Sunbeams peek into Sam's room. Sam wakes up with a big, wide smile. “It's my special day!” he whispers, wiggling his toes under his blanket.

Sam's friends, Max and Leo, are coming soon. Sam is excited. He wants everything to be ready for the party. He wheels over to his big blue box. Inside are games, toys, and a shiny red ball. He takes out the puzzle pieces, stacking them in a neat pile. “We'll play this together,” he says, patting the puzzle.

Sam lines up his stuffed animals on the bed. The bear wears a tiny party hat. The rabbit has a ribbon around its neck. “You are guests too!” Sam giggles.

Downstairs, Sam hears the doorbell. Ding-dong! He hurries to the door. Max stands with a yellow balloon. Leo has a bag with green paper peeking out. “Happy birthday, Sam!” they shout together.

Sam feels warm and happy. “Come in! Let's get ready for the games,” he says.

The friends gather in the living room. Sunlight dances on the walls. Sam shows Max and Leo the games he picked. There is a tower of colorful blocks, a soft ball, and the big puzzle. Max points to the blocks. “Let's build the tallest tower!” he says.

Everyone likes that idea. They sit together on the soft rug. Sam places a block, then Max, then Leo. One by one, the tower grows taller. “Careful, careful!” Sam says, holding his breath as Leo adds the last block. The tower wobbles, but it stays up! The boys clap and laugh. “We did it!” Leo cheers.

Next, Sam rolls the red ball to Max. Max catches it and rolls it to Leo. The ball zooms across the rug, round and round. Sometimes it bumps into a little foot or a chair. That makes everyone giggle. “Let's roll to the bear!” Max says. They try to roll the ball to the stuffed bear on the bed. Sometimes the ball misses, but sometimes it goes just right and bumps the bear's soft paw.

Now, it's time for the puzzle. Sam opens the box. The picture is a bright, sunny park with kites and flowers. Max finds the corner pieces. Leo looks for the ones with blue sky. Sam finds the pieces with green grass. Together, they fit the pieces, one after another. Sometimes a piece is tricky, but Sam turns it around and tries again. “Almost there!” he says.

At last, the puzzle is finished. The boys cheer. “We did it together!” Sam says, feeling proud.

Suddenly, Sam's mom appears with a big surprise. She brings a tray of cupcakes. Each cupcake has a swirly hat of icing and a tiny flag. The boys' eyes sparkle. “Make a wish, Sam!” says Max.

Sam closes his eyes. He thinks about his friends, the games, and the happy tower. He blows out the candles. Everyone claps.

They eat cupcakes and laugh. Icing gets on Leo's nose. Max drops a crumb, and Sam's bear almost gets a taste.

After the treats, Sam looks at his friends. “The best game was playing together,” he says. Max nods. Leo agrees. “Let's play again soon!”

The sun is gentle outside. The room feels cozy and bright. The boys snuggle next to each other, tired and happy. Sam smiles, knowing this was the best birthday ever, because friends make every game special.
