Part 1
Mia held Dad's hand as they walked into the airport. The floor was shiny. The lights were soft and bright.
Mia looked up. “Are planes big?”
Dad smiled. “Very big.”
A kind woman in a neat uniform waved. She had calm eyes and a warm smile. “Hello! I'm Captain Nora.”
Mia's eyes grew round. “You fly the plane?”
“I do,” Captain Nora said. “And I do not fly alone. I fly with my team.”
“Team?” Mia asked.
“Yes,” Captain Nora said. “A pilot team, cabin crew, and ground crew. We help each other. We check, we talk, we listen.”
Mia liked the sound of that. “Like when I build blocks with Leo.”
“Just like that,” Captain Nora said.
Captain Nora kneeled so she was close. “Would you like to see how we get ready?”
Mia nodded. “Yes, please.”
They walked to a window. Outside, a plane rested like a big white bird.
Captain Nora pointed. “First, the ground crew helps the plane. They bring bags. They bring fuel. They guide the plane safely.”
A person in a bright vest waved two glowing sticks. Mia waved back.
Captain Nora laughed softly. “They guide with their hands and lights. They make sure we are in the right place.”
Mia asked, “Do you check the plane?”
“Oh yes,” Captain Nora said. “I check the outside. I look at the wings. I look at the wheels. I look for anything strange.”
Mia blinked. “Wings!”
Captain Nora nodded. “The wings help the plane lift. They hold the air, like a gentle hug.”
Mia held her own arms out. “Hug wings!”
Dad chuckled. “Hug wings.”
Captain Nora went on. “Then I go to the cockpit. That is the front room where I fly.”
Mia whispered, “Cock…pit.”
“It's a funny word,” Captain Nora said. “But it is a safe room. Lots of buttons. Lots of screens.”
Mia asked, “Do you press them all?”
Captain Nora shook her head. “No. I follow steps. One step, then the next. I use a checklist. It helps me remember. It helps me stay safe.”
“A list?” Mia said.
“Yes,” Captain Nora said. “Check, check, check.”
Mia liked the rhythm. “Check, check, check.”
Captain Nora pointed to her ear. “I also listen on my headset. I talk to my co-pilot and to air traffic control.”
“Who is that?” Mia asked.
“The helpers in a tall tower,” Captain Nora said. “They watch the sky. They tell us when it is our turn. They keep planes spaced apart, like cars on a road, but in the air.”
Mia's mouth made a small “O.” “Cars in the sky.”
Captain Nora smiled. “Not too close. Always enough space.”
Mia felt cozy. Everyone was helping. Everyone was careful.
Part 2
Captain Nora led Mia and Dad to a quiet door. “We will not go inside today,” she said gently. “But we can peek and learn.”
They stood where they could see the cockpit. It looked like a little glowing cave. Soft lights. Neat seats.
Captain Nora spoke in a calm voice. “Before we fly, my co-pilot and I plan the trip. We look at the weather.”
“Like rain?” Mia asked.
“Like rain, like wind, like clouds,” Captain Nora said. “If the weather is not good, we wait. Safety first.”
Mia repeated, “Safety first.”
Captain Nora nodded. “Then we choose our path in the sky. We also check how much fuel we need.”
“Fuel is like… plane food?” Mia asked.
Captain Nora's eyes twinkled. “Yes. Plane food. Enough to go, and extra, just in case.”
Mia felt proud. “Extra!”
“Extra is smart,” Captain Nora said. “And we do not guess. We calculate.”
Mia tried the big word. “Cal…cu…late.”
“You did it,” Captain Nora said. “And we talk, talk, talk. Clear words. Kind words.”
Dad asked, “What do you say to your team?”
Captain Nora put a hand on her chest. “I say, ‘Let's work together.' I say, ‘If you see something, tell me.' I say, ‘We can ask questions.'”
Mia nodded hard. “Ask questions.”
“Yes,” Captain Nora said. “Questions keep us safe.”
A soft chime sounded in the hallway. Captain Nora glanced at a small clock. “It is almost time for my flight. But first, I take a quiet moment.”
She walked to a little table and poured a glass of water. She held it with both hands. She took slow sips.
Mia watched. The water looked clear and still.
Captain Nora sighed softly. “Ah. Water helps me feel calm. A calm pilot is a careful pilot.”
Mia whispered, “Calm.”
Captain Nora set the glass down. “Now I am ready. Ready in my mind. Ready in my body.”
Mia asked, “Are you scared?”
Captain Nora shook her head. “No. I feel steady. I trust my training. I trust my team. And I trust the plane, because we checked it.”
“Check, check, check,” Mia said again.
“Check, check, check,” Captain Nora agreed.
A friendly cabin crew member walked by. “Captain Nora, we're set.”
Captain Nora answered, “Thank you. Great teamwork.”
The cabin crew member smiled at Mia. “We take care of everyone on board.”
Mia asked, “You help too?”
“Yes,” the crew member said. “We help people sit safely. We help with seat belts. We show where the exits are. We use gentle voices.”
Mia loved gentle voices.
Captain Nora looked back at Mia. “Would you like to pretend with me?”
Mia bounced a little. “Yes!”
Captain Nora held up her hands like a steering wheel. “I say, ‘Seat belts on.'”
Mia copied her. “Seat belts on!”
Captain Nora said, “We listen.”
Mia put a hand to her ear. “We listen.”
Captain Nora said, “We work as a team.”
Mia reached for Dad's hand. “Team!”
Dad squeezed. “Team.”
Part 3
Soon it was time to say goodbye. Captain Nora waved. “Thank you for learning with me.”
Mia waved back. “Fly safe, Captain Nora!”
“I will,” Captain Nora said. “And I will remember: we are never alone. We are together.”
Mia and Dad walked to their gate. Mia felt sleepy in a good way. She imagined the plane like a big white bird again.
At bedtime that night, Dad tucked Mia under her blanket. The room was dim and quiet.
Mia whispered, “Dad?”
“Yes, sweetheart.”
“Captain Nora checks the wings,” Mia said. “She uses a list. She talks to her team. And the tower helps.”
Dad nodded. “You remembered so much.”
Mia yawned. “Safety first.”
“Yes,” Dad said. “Safety first.”
Mia closed her eyes, then opened them again. “Dad, what is it like up there?”
Dad spoke softly. “Captain Nora once told me about her favorite view.”
Mia's voice was tiny. “What view?”
Dad's words were slow, like a lullaby. “She said that sometimes, very early, the plane is above the clouds. The world is quiet. The sky is wide. And then the sun wakes up.”
Mia imagined it. A soft orange line. Pink light spreading gently.
Dad continued, “She said the sunrise looks like warm paint on the clouds. Gold and peach. Like a new day saying hello.”
Mia smiled in the dark. “Hello, sun.”
“And Captain Nora,” Dad said, “sits steady and calm. She trusts her co-pilot. She trusts her crew. Everyone does their job. Everyone helps.”
Mia hugged her blanket. “Team in the sky.”
“Yes,” Dad whispered. “Team in the sky.”
Mia's breathing slowed. In her mind, the plane floated smoothly. The wings held the air in a gentle hug. The sunrise glowed above the clouds, soft and safe.
And Mia drifted to sleep, holding that warm, bright memory from up high.
