Chapter 1: The Big List
Max was six years old. Max had messy hair, bright red shoes, and the biggest smile on the street. Max's best friend was Sam. Sam was six too. Sam wore a blue hat with a yellow star, even when it was not cold. Max and Sam did everything together. They played hide and seek. They raced their scooters. They shared peanut butter sandwiches at lunchtime.
One chilly afternoon, Max sat at the kitchen table. Outside, snowflakes danced and twirled. It was almost New Year's Eve! Max's mom gave him a shiny new notebook. The cover was blue with gold sparkles. “This is for your New Year's resolutions,” she said. Max loved new things, especially notebooks. Max wanted to do it right.
“Sam!” called Max into the hallway. “Let's write our New Year's resolutions!”
Sam ran in, his hat bouncing. “What's a resolution?” Sam asked, his eyes wide.
“It's a promise you make to yourself for the new year,” Max said. He liked the sound of that. “It's like making a wish, but you try to make it come true.”
Sam nodded, thinking hard. “I want to eat more cookies,” he said.
Max giggled. “Me too! But I think resolutions are about getting better at things.”
Sam scratched his head. “Okay. I want to tie my own shoes. And maybe… ride my bike without training wheels!”
Max wrote in the notebook:
- Tie my shoes
- Ride my bike
- Eat more cookies (just a little)
Sam added, “I want to be nice to my sister. Even when she hides my dinosaurs.”
Max wrote that down too. The list got longer and longer. They wanted to clean their rooms, finish puzzles, help their moms, and jump higher than ever before. Every time they thought of something, they wrote it down. The page was full of dreams.
Chapter 2: The Festive Street
The next day, the whole neighborhood buzzed with excitement. It was New Year's Eve! Neighbors hung twinkling lights everywhere. Red, green, blue, and yellow lights turned the street into a rainbow. Mrs. Patel was making spicy popcorn. Mr. Green was setting up a hot chocolate stand. Big kids were helping put up a banner: “Happy New Year!” It was bright and shiny and swung in the winter wind.
Max and Sam zoomed up and down the sidewalk on their scooters. They waved at the neighbors and tried to spot every single decoration. Max's dad was setting up fireworks for later. “Safety first!” he said, waving his gloves.
Max and Sam watched as the grownups worked together. Everyone was smiling. Everyone was busy. There was music and laughter. The street smelled like popcorn and chocolate and cold winter air. Max felt wiggly inside, like he might bounce right out of his shoes.
“Let's show our resolutions to everyone!” Sam said.
Max nodded, excited. They ran to Mrs. Patel first. She read the list and smiled. “Those are wonderful resolutions! Remember, it's okay if you need help. Trying new things is a big adventure!”
Next, they found Mr. Green. He laughed at “eat more cookies.” “That's my favorite one!” he said. “But don't forget, cookies are best when you share.”
Max and Sam looked at each other. Sharing was hard sometimes, but it made things more fun. They added “share more cookies” to the list.
Chapter 3: The New Year's Mishap
Evening came. The street was full of happy people. There were games and prizes, music and dancing. Max and Sam played pin the tail on the donkey. They spun and missed and laughed. They tried to jump rope, but Max's foot got tangled. Sam fell on his bottom. They laughed even more.
Then it was time for the big countdown. Max and Sam sat on the curb with their families. The sky was dark. Mr. Green's hot chocolate was warm in their hands. Everyone counted together. “Ten! Nine! Eight!” Max squeezed Sam's hand. “Seven! Six! Five!” Sam squeezed back. “Four! Three! Two! One!”
Fireworks exploded in the sky! Red, blue, green, gold. Max clapped. Sam cheered. The whole neighborhood cheered. It was a brand new year!
But then—oh no! Max spilled his hot chocolate. It dripped down his coat and onto his red shoes. “Uh-oh,” Max said. He felt tears sting his eyes.
Sam saw and gave Max his napkin. “It's okay,” Sam said. “It's just a little spill.”
Max wiped his coat. His shoes were still sticky. Max wanted to hide, but Sam stayed with him. “Let's go get more hot chocolate together,” Sam said.
They walked to Mr. Green. Mr. Green filled their cups and gave them extra marshmallows. “Sometimes things get messy,” he said, smiling. “That's how we learn. Happy New Year, boys!”
Max felt better. He remembered his resolutions. He wanted to be braver, kinder, and try new things—even when things got sticky.
Chapter 4: The Lesson of the List
The next morning, Max and Sam met on the porch. Max wore his clean red shoes. Sam's hat was extra fluffy. They brought out the notebook and read their resolutions again.
“Should we try something today?” Max asked.
Sam nodded. “Let's try tying our shoes—by ourselves!”
It was hard. Max's laces kept making funny loops. Sam's fingers got twisted. They giggled and tried again. After a few tries, Max made a knot. Sam cheered! Then Sam tried and made a bow. Max clapped!
“We did it!” they shouted together.
They crossed “tie my shoes” off the list. Some things on the list were harder. Riding a bike without training wheels felt a little scary. Cleaning their rooms sounded boring. Being nice to sisters was tricky sometimes. But Max and Sam decided to keep trying, every day.
They saw their neighbors outside. Everyone was smiling, waving, and saying, “Happy New Year!” Max and Sam waved back. The street still sparkled with lights. The memories of the party made them feel warm and happy inside.
Max looked at Sam. “This year, let's help each other with our resolutions,” he said.
Sam smiled. “And if we spill hot chocolate, we help clean up!”
Max laughed. “And if we fall off our bikes, we help each other up.”
The boys hugged. They felt proud. They knew that trying new things was easier with a friend. Sometimes they would make mistakes. Sometimes things would get messy. But that was okay. That was how they would learn and grow.
Max opened the notebook and added one last resolution:
- Be the best friend I can be.
Sam drew a big smiley face.
The new year had just begun. Max and Sam were ready for every adventure. Together, they would laugh, learn, and celebrate, every single day.
And every time they looked at their sparkling blue notebook, they remembered: with kindness, courage, and a good friend, every new year could be the best year ever.
