Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Lucy. Lucy was three years old. She loved to explore. Every morning, Lucy woke up with a big smile. She always wondered, “What will I discover today?”
One sunny morning, Lucy pulled on her blue boots. She zipped her red jacket. She was ready for a new adventure in her backyard. Mommy waved from the door. “Be careful and have fun,” Mommy said. Lucy nodded, “I will!”
Lucy stepped onto the soft green grass. She looked around. The trees whispered, the flowers danced in the wind. Lucy twirled and laughed. It was a perfect day for exploring.
Lucy saw a shiny pebble on the ground. “Where did you come from?” she wondered. She picked it up. The pebble was smooth and cool. Lucy decided to follow the pebbles. Maybe they would show her something special.
As Lucy walked, she saw tiny paw prints in the mud. They were round and close together. Lucy asked, “Whose prints are these?” She looked at her teddy bear. “Maybe a rabbit!” said Lucy. She put her hand to her nose and wiggled it. “Hop, hop, hop!” said Lucy, bouncing like a rabbit.
Lucy followed the paw prints. They went under a bush. Lucy peered under the leaves. She saw a fluffy tail disappear. “Wait for me, bunny!” Lucy giggled. She crawled slowly, looking carefully. She was always gentle with plants and bugs, because Mommy told her to be kind and careful.
Next, Lucy came to a big puddle. The paw prints stopped at the puddle's edge. Lucy stopped to think. She remembered Mommy's words: “Look before you leap.” Lucy looked at the puddle. It was deep and shiny. She did not want to get her socks wet.
“I will go around,” said Lucy. She stepped carefully, one foot, then the other. The sun made the puddle sparkle. Lucy smiled. “I did it!” she cheered.
On the other side, Lucy saw more paw prints, but now they were bigger! She sat and thought. “Maybe it's a cat now,” she said. She stood up and crept like a cat. “Meow, meow,” whispered Lucy. Lucy moved quietly, just like a careful kitten.
The prints led to the big apple tree. Lucy stopped. There was something shiny in the grass. It was a red button! Lucy picked it up. She wondered, “Did the cat drop this?”
Just then, a little bird landed nearby. “Tweet, tweet!” sang the bird. Lucy smiled and waved. “Hello, bird! Did you see the cat?” The bird flapped its wings and hopped closer.
Lucy followed the bird to the garden fence. There, under some leaves, was a clump of soft fur. But there was no cat, just more paw prints and a daisy. Lucy smiled. “Thank you, kitty, for letting me play,” she whispered.
Lucy looked around and saw the sun was starting to go down. She felt happy and proud. She had followed the tracks, hopped like a bunny, crawled like a kitten, and solved little puzzles all by herself. She remembered to be careful at the puddle and gentle with all the animals.
Lucy walked back to the house. Mommy was waiting, arms open wide. “Did you have a good adventure?” asked Mommy.
“Yes!” said Lucy, hugging her tight. “I was a bunny and a cat. I found a button and followed footprints. I was careful. I had fun!”
Mommy smiled and smoothed Lucy's hair. “You are brave, clever, and kind,” she said.
Lucy felt warm inside. She put the button in her coat pocket. She would remember her backyard adventure. “Tomorrow,” Lucy whispered, “maybe I'll be a butterfly.”
Lucy snuggled close to Mommy, feeling safe and proud. The world was big and bright, and Lucy was ready for more gentle adventures.
