Chapter 1: Benny's Big New Year's Plan
Benny the beaver lived in a cozy burrow at the edge of Willow Pond. He was a young beaver with shiny brown fur, big front teeth, and a tail as flat as a pancake. Benny loved pancakes, but that's not important right now.
New Year's Eve was Benny's favorite time of year. The whole neighborhood of Willow Woods came alive with excitement. There were sparkling lights in every tree, delicious smells drifting from the burrows, and giggles from every corner. Benny could hardly sit still.
“Mom, Mom!” Benny called, hopping from one foot to the other. “Is it time for the New Year's party yet?”
“Not quite, Benny,” said Mrs. Beaver, smoothing his fur. “We need to finish our decorations and bake the special honey-nut bread.”
Benny's nose twitched with joy. He loved helping his mom, especially when it involved honey-nut bread. He grabbed a wooden spoon and started stirring the batter, but he got a little too excited and splashed flour on his nose. He looked like a ghost!
“Boo!” Benny giggled, making his little sister Millie jump.
“Benny, you're so silly,” Millie said, sticking out her tongue.
After a while, Benny peeked out the window. He saw his neighbors, the Squirrel family, hanging lanterns shaped like acorns. Across the path, the Rabbit twins were piling up carrots to make a carrot tower. And old Mr. Hedgehog was setting up a table with cups for his famous “Prickly Punch.”
Benny bounced up and down. “Mom, can I go see what everyone else is doing?”
Mrs. Beaver smiled. “You may, Benny. But be back before dark, and don't get into any mischief!”
Benny saluted with his floury paw. “Yes, ma'am!”
Chapter 2: A Curious Discovery
Benny waddled out into the chilly air, his scarf swinging behind him. He visited the Squirrel family first.
“Happy New Year's Eve, Benny!” called Sandy Squirrel. She was hanging a lantern from her tail, which Benny thought was very clever.
“Wow, Sandy! Your acorn lanterns are amazing,” Benny said. “What's your family's New Year's tradition?”
Sandy grinned. “We write our wishes for the new year on leaves and hang them on the wishing tree. Want to write one?”
Benny scribbled, “I wish to eat the world's biggest pancake,” and hung it on the tree. He giggled. That would be a very big pancake.
Next, Benny skipped over to the Rabbit twins.
“Carrot tower, Benny! Want to help?” called Ruby Rabbit.
Benny stacked carrots high, but when he tried to add the last one, the whole tower tumbled down. The rabbits burst out laughing.
Ruby wiped her eyes. “Our tradition is carrot stacking. Whoever makes the tallest tower gets to eat the first carrot of the year!”
“That's funny,” Benny said. “But I'm not very good at stacking.”
Then Benny wandered over to Mr. Hedgehog's table.
“Hello, Benny! Ready for some Prickly Punch?” Mr. Hedgehog asked, pouring a cup.
Benny took a sip. It was tangy and sweet and made his whiskers wiggle. “Yum! What's your tradition, Mr. Hedgehog?”
Mr. Hedgehog smiled. “At midnight, I roll down the hill. It's a hedgehog thing. It brings good luck!”
Benny imagined rolling down a hill and landing in a snowbank. He giggled. “That sounds fun!”
Benny thanked his neighbors and started home, thinking about all the different traditions. But then, something caught his eye at the edge of the woods. It was a tiny, sparkling light.
Benny tiptoed closer. There, in a hollow log, sat a family of mice. They were gathered around a small pile of shiny pebbles, singing a cheerful song.
Benny's ears perked up. He'd never seen this before!
He cleared his throat. “Excuse me, what are you doing?”
Mama Mouse looked up with a smile. “Hello, Benny! We're singing the Pebble Song. It's our family tradition. We find a shiny pebble for each happy memory from the past year and sing about it together.”
Little Max Mouse handed Benny a pebble. “You can try!”
Benny thought hard. “My happiest memory this year was when I learned to swim backwards!” He sang, “I swam backwards, splash, splash, splash, and didn't crash into the trash!”
The mice cheered and clapped. Benny felt warm inside. This was a wonderful tradition!
Chapter 3: The New Tradition
Back at home, Benny burst through the door. “Mom! Millie! I found the best New Year's tradition ever!”
Mrs. Beaver looked surprised. “What is it, Benny?”
Benny told them all about the Pebble Song and the happy memories. Millie's eyes sparkled. “Let's do it!”
Mrs. Beaver nodded. “That's a beautiful idea, Benny. Let's find our own pebbles.”
The Beaver family bundled up in scarves and mittens and searched along the pond for the shiniest pebbles. Benny found a blue pebble that glowed in the moonlight. Millie picked a tiny pink one. Mrs. Beaver found a pebble shaped like a heart.
Back inside, they gathered by the fire. Benny went first.
“My happy memory is learning to swim backwards!” he sang, making everyone laugh.
Millie sang about the time she built her first dam all by herself.
Mrs. Beaver sang about the day Benny and Millie surprised her with breakfast in bed—though the pancakes were a little burnt.
Benny's dad came in with a big yawn. “What's all this singing?”
Benny explained, and soon Dad joined in, singing about fixing the leaky roof without getting wet (well, not too wet).
The Beavers laughed and clapped for each other. Soon, neighbors knocked at the door, curious about the singing.
“What's going on in here?” asked Sandy Squirrel, peeking in.
“We're singing our happy memories!” Benny explained. “Want to join?”
Soon, the burrow was packed with animals—squirrels, rabbits, hedgehogs, and even the Mouse family. Everyone shared a happy memory. There was so much laughing, the windows got foggy!
Ruby Rabbit sang about her first bunny hop race. Mr. Hedgehog sang about his birthday picnic. Even shy Max Mouse sang about the time he found a crumb of cheese bigger than his head.
Benny felt his heart grow three sizes bigger. This was the best New Year's Eve ever.
Chapter 4: New Resolutions and a Happy New Year
As midnight drew near, everyone bundled up and went outside. The sky was filled with twinkling stars. Benny's dad handed out sparklers, and everyone waved them in the air.
Sandy Squirrel led the countdown. “Ten, nine, eight…”
Benny squeezed Millie's paw. “What's your resolution for the new year, Millie?”
Millie grinned. “To build the best dam ever! What about you, Benny?”
Benny thought for a moment. “I want to learn to juggle pancakes!” he said, making everyone laugh.
“Five, four, three…”
Mr. Hedgehog rolled down the hill, squealing with delight. The rabbits tossed carrots in the air. The mice sang a cheerful tune, and the squirrels did a dance.
“Two, one… HAPPY NEW YEAR!”
Fireworks burst above Willow Pond in a shower of colors. Everyone hugged and cheered. Benny spun around, his heart bursting with joy. He looked at his friends and family and knew this was the best place in the world to be.
Benny smiled up at the sky and whispered, “Happy New Year, Willow Woods. Let's make lots more happy memories.”
And from that night on, every animal in Willow Woods sang the Pebble Song at New Year's, sharing their happiest memories and making new ones together—one silly, joyful, pancake-filled year at a time.
