A tall, smiling, kind firefighter with a round face and fair skin wears a large red helmet, shiny red boots and a yellow jacket with reflective stripes as he climbs down a ladder gently carrying a small kitten; a little 5-year-old girl with brown pigtails and a blue polka-dot dress stands at the base of the tree with arms outstretched and a hopeful, radiant face ready to take the cat; another firefighter, bald with a small mustache, stands near the shiny red fire truck with his hand on the open door, looking proud and attentive; the kitten is a female orange tabby with big bright eyes and soft fur, mewing then calming against the firefighter; the scene is a sunny neighborhood street with a large leafy apple tree, gray sidewalk, colorful houses in the background and the red fire truck parked nearby, creating a warm, reassuring atmosphere. report a problem with this image

Tom is a kind man. He is a firefighter. Tom wears red boots and a big red hat. In the morning, Tom goes to the fire station. His friends are there. They wave and smile.

Tom checks his fire truck. It is red and shiny. He sees the big, long hose. It sleeps on the truck. Tom pats it gently. “Good hose,” he says. Tom looks at his helmet. It feels safe and strong.

Ding-ding! The bell rings. A little cat is on a tree. She is too high. She cannot get down. Tom smiles. He says, “I can help!” Tom climbs in the fire truck. His friend drives fast, but not too fast.

At the tree, Tom sees the cat. “Hello, kitty,” says Tom. He puts a ladder next to the tree. Tom climbs up, step by step. He reaches the cat. “It's okay,” says Tom. The cat meows. Tom gives a gentle hug. The cat feels safe now.

Tom goes down with the cat. The cat's friend says, “Thank you, Tom!” Tom smiles. The cat purrs and rubs Tom's hand.

At home, everyone feels happy. Tom waves goodbye and goes back to the fire station.

Every day, firefighters help people and animals. It is nice to help others.
