Chapter One: The Twinkle in Tilly's Eye
Tilly Bloom loved Halloween more than any other day in the whole year. Maybe it was the way the leaves looked like crispy cornflakes on the ground, or the rustle they made when she skipped through them. Maybe it was the pumpkin-shaped treats and the friendly ghosts smiling from every shop window. But, most of all, Tilly loved the costumes. She had been a ladybug, a wizard, and even a banana in past years, but this year, she wanted something extra special.
This year, Tilly wasn't planning her costume just for herself—she had a secret plan. In her apartment building, the person on “Halloween duty” was always Mrs. Willowby, the building manager. Most people thought Mrs. Willowby looked stern, but Tilly knew she was warm inside, like melted chocolate in a cookie. Every Halloween, Mrs. Willowby sat in the hallway behind a little table, handing out treats with a tired smile. Tilly had noticed her sighs, the way she rubbed her back, and how her eyes always lit up just a little when children thanked her.
Tilly had an idea. What if she could make Mrs. Willowby's Halloween just as magical as everyone else's? This year, Tilly would give Mrs. Willowby a surprise!
The day before Halloween, Tilly pulled out her sketchbook and colored pencils. “Let's see…” she mumbled, doodling quickly. Her favorite idea was a secret Halloween show, just for Mrs. Willowby. Tilly grinned. She would need: her best friends—Sammy and Juniper—a few costumes, and a basket of Mrs. Willowby's favorite toffees from the corner shop.
With a twinkle in her eye, Tilly was ready.
Chapter Two: Some Silly Spooks and Planning
After lunch, Tilly called Sammy and Juniper over. The three friends huddled at Tilly's small kitchen table, eyeing the pile of costume bits and bobs Tilly had gathered: a witch's hat, a fluffy tail, a sparkly mask, and even a pair of rubbery bat wings.
Sammy grinned. “I'll be the world's first vampire-bunny!”
Juniper giggled as she tried on the sparkly mask. “And I'll be a mysterious superhero ghost. No one will guess it's me.”
Tilly handed them each a tiny script. “We'll put on a mini play for Mrs. Willowby. There's just one problem,” she whispered, “we need to keep it a secret so she doesn't find out before Halloween night.”
Sammy thumped his paw (that is, the bunny paw part of his costume). “No problem! I'm as quiet as a carrot.”
It took an hour of laughter, a little bit of arguing about who got to wear the witch's hat (Sammy won, promising to give it back before midnight), and two snack breaks to finish their plan. They'd sneak into the hallway just before Mrs. Willowby started her candy shift. When she sat down, they would pop out from behind the big potted plant and begin!
Juniper giggled. “Do you think she'll faint with surprise?”
Tilly shook her head. “No way. She's braver than she looks. Besides, it's only us!”
They practiced their lines, trying not to giggle whenever Sammy fluffed his bunny tail in a dramatic way. Tilly's cat, Marmalade, watched with wide green eyes and even joined as the official audience, approving with a slow blink.
By the end of the afternoon, Tilly felt a little nervous but mostly excited. “Tomorrow is going to be the best Halloween ever,” she said, hugging her friends.
Chapter Three: Tricks, Treats, and Tingles
Halloween finally arrived, and the whole building buzzed with excitement. Tilly's mom painted whiskers on her cheeks, while Tilly slipped into her own costume: the World's First Pumpkin Detective, complete with orange hat and magnifying glass.
“Ready, Detective Tilly?” her mom asked, smiling.
“Ready!” said Tilly, her heart doing a happy flip. She checked her list: costumes—check, toffees—check, script—double check, and a secret bag of confetti stars for a sparkly ending—triple check.
When dusk fell, children in monster masks and fairy wings ran along the hallway. Tilly, Sammy, and Juniper crouched behind the potted plant, squeezed together and trying not to sneeze. They peered out just as Mrs. Willowby shuffled down the hallway, arms full of treat bowls.
She grumbled, “Every year, more candy. Next time, I'll dress as a walking jellybean.”
Tilly smiled at her friends and whispered, “Showtime.”
Out leaped Juniper and Sammy as the superhero ghost and vampire-bunny, making silly “boo!” noises while Tilly jumped forward, brandishing her magnifying glass.
“Stop, ghosts and ghouls! The Pumpkin Detective is here to solve the Case of the Disappearing Smiles!” she declared.
At first, Mrs. Willowby looked surprised—her jaw dropped, and her glasses slipped down her nose. Tilly worried she'd gone too far. But then, Mrs. Willowby's face broke into a wide, wobbly grin.
“Good gracious, what's all this?” she chuckled, her tired eyes twinkling.
Tilly, Sammy, and Juniper performed their short, silly play. They pretended to search for missing smiles (Sammy found one under his hat), Juniper flew around as the superhero ghost, and Tilly waved her orange hat like a real detective.
When it ended, Tilly handed Mrs. Willowby the gift basket of toffees. “Thank you for making our Halloweens so fun,” she said, cheeks rosy. “This year, we wanted you to have a surprise, too.”
Mrs. Willowby looked at the children. “Well, you've certainly made my night magical. And don't tell anyone, but the superhero ghost is my favorite!”
Everyone giggled, even Tilly's mom, who had peeked out to watch.
Chapter Four: Laughter, Stars, and a Happy Ending
For the rest of the night, Mrs. Willowby handed out treats in a much brighter mood. She even offered extra jellybeans to every costume she liked, especially to superhero ghosts and vampire-bunnies.
Later, when the halls quieted and the trick-or-treaters were gone, Tilly, Sammy, and Juniper had their own treat picnic on the hallway floor, surrounded by a sea of candy wrappers and a few leftover confetti stars.
“I think we solved the mystery of the missing smiles,” Juniper said, munching a caramel.
Sammy wiggled his bunny ears. “And we didn't even need a magic spell. Just a little kindness.”
Tilly leaned back and let out a long, happy sigh. The apartment building felt extra warm and cozy, as if the walls were hugging everyone inside. Through the window, she could see the moon winking behind a cloud, as if it too was part of their adventure.
Halloween was full of giggles and shivers, costumes and candy, but the best part, Tilly decided, was making someone else smile. After all, a night filled with laughter and friends was the very best treat of all.
She closed her eyes and let the gentle pumpkin-orange glow of Halloween fill her dreams, finishing the night with one last, contented sigh of joy.
