Chapter 1: The Library's Whisper
Mila loved the library. She liked the crisp rustle of pages, the neat rows of books, and the way the light fell through the tall windows. Each Friday after school, she hurried there, her backpack bouncing behind her.
Mila's favorite spot was the reading nook, shaped like a giant pumpkin with soft orange cushions. She would curl up inside, her nose deep in a story about witches, friendly ghosts, or ancient castles with secret doors. The library was never scary for Mila, not even in October. Not even when the wind howled outside and shadows danced along the shelves.
But this Friday felt different. There was a special buzz in the air. Pumpkins with toothy grins sat on the counter. Paper bats dangled from the ceiling. The librarian, Mrs. Appleby, wore a sparkly witch hat.
Mila picked her usual book—a collection of magical adventures—and settled into the pumpkin nook. She had just reached a chapter about a clever cat when she heard a soft, mysterious singing coming from somewhere nearby.
At first, Mila thought it was her imagination. But the song grew clearer, weaving through the shelves: “Spooky shadows, flicker bright, gather round on Halloween night…”
She peeked out. In the far corner, where the storytimes happened, a group of kids had gathered in a circle. Some wore costumes—pirates, princesses, a shy vampire with plastic fangs. A sign read: “Halloween Song Corner—Join in!”
Curious, Mila tiptoed closer, her book pressed to her chest.
Chapter 2: The Gift with No Name
The singing circle was lively. Someone played a triangle, and another banged gently on a drum. Mrs. Appleby led the group, twirling her sparkly hat.
Mila stood at the edge, humming along. Suddenly, a small, shiny object caught her eye. It was tucked beneath a curly orange cushion. Mila bent down and found a tiny box, wrapped in purple paper with a silver bow.
Her heart thudded. Who had left this here? The box had no label, no name, not even a tag saying “Happy Halloween!” It must be a surprise for someone. Maybe it was a prize for the best costume? Or a gift for the best singer?
Mila looked around, searching for clues. The circle finished a round of “Monster Mash.” Laughter bubbled. No one seemed to notice the mysterious box.
Mila's fingers tingled. She wanted to know who the gift was for—and who had left it. It felt like the start of one of her book adventures, right there in the library.
She decided to keep the box safe while she investigated. She slipped it into her backpack and took a seat at the edge of the singing circle. Her eyes scanned the room, looking for suspicious faces or secretive smiles.
As the next song began, a cheerful woman with blue hair and glittery cheeks appeared at the back of the room. She set down a bag full of paints, brushes, and sponges. “Face painting!” she called, waving. “Step right up for a magical Halloween makeover!”
Mila's curiosity grew. Maybe the face painter had seen something.
Chapter 3: Painted Faces and Hidden Clues
One by one, the children lined up to have their faces painted. Witches grew warts, tigers gained stripes, and even Mrs. Appleby ended up with a sparkly spider web on her cheek.
Mila shuffled to the front of the line. The face painter's name was Luna. She had a warm smile and twinkling earrings, shaped like tiny crescent moons.
“What would you like to be?” Luna asked, dipping her brush into green paint.
“A bookworm, please,” Mila said shyly. “With glasses and maybe a funny hat.”
Luna grinned. “A bookworm! That's the first today.” She brushed gentle strokes across Mila's cheeks, painting green swirls, round glasses, and a red-and-yellow striped hat.
While Luna worked, Mila gathered her courage. “Did you see anyone leave a present in the song corner?” she whispered.
Luna paused, her brush hovering. “A present? No, but I did see a small witch sneaking around with something shiny. She dropped her bucket, then picked it up and rushed off.”
Mila's mind raced. Maybe the small witch dropped the gift by mistake! She glanced around the room and spotted a girl in a floppy witch hat near the snack table, holding an empty orange bucket.
As Luna finished the last swirl, Mila thanked her and hurried to the snack table. She smiled at the witch girl, who was munching on a jelly eyeball.
“Hi,” Mila said, “did you lose something? Or maybe, um, leave something for someone?”
The witch girl's eyes widened, but she shook her head. “Nope. My bucket was full of candy, but it tipped over and now it's empty. No presents here.”
Mila nodded, thinking hard. She still didn't know who left the gift. The mystery deepened.
Chapter 4: The Case of the Missing Bucket
Suddenly, a shout echoed from the song corner. “Where's my bucket?!” someone cried. It was the vampire boy, the one with the plastic fangs.
Everyone turned. The vampire boy looked frantic. “It was right here! It had my treats and my flashlight!”
Mila hurried over. She knew what it felt like to lose something special. “Don't worry,” she said. “We'll help you find it.”
The group searched under chairs, behind the puppet theater, and around the pumpkin nook. No bucket. Mrs. Appleby checked the lost-and-found. Nothing.
Mila thought about Luna's words. The witch girl's bucket had ended up empty. The vampire's bucket was missing. And someone had left a mysterious gift.
A gentle tap landed on Mila's shoulder. Luna, the face painter, smiled at her. “Sometimes, things move when we're busy singing. Did you check the music corner?”
Mila peeked behind a tall stack of songbooks. There, half-hidden, sparkled the vampire boy's black bucket. And inside, next to the spilled jelly beans, was a crumpled note.
Mila called everyone over. The vampire boy hugged his bucket, grinning with relief. Mila unfolded the note. In silver ink, it read: “To someone who loves stories—Happy Halloween! May your day be full of magic and kind surprises.”
Everyone oohed. Mila's cheeks glowed warm. She realized the gift might be for her—a thank you for loving books and sharing stories.
But who had left it?
Chapter 5: Shadows, Songs, and Secrets
As the song circle gathered again, Mrs. Appleby announced, “Let's sing one last Halloween song before we tidy up!”
Mila joined in, her painted face prickling with excitement. The song was about friendly ghosts who liked to dance in the moonlight. The library seemed to glow with laughter.
After the song, the children began to stack chairs and straighten cushions. Mila helped, her mind swirling. She wanted to thank her mysterious friend.
Luna came over, dabbing at a spot of paint on Mila's nose. “Did you solve your mystery?” she whispered.
Mila shook her head. “I think the present was for me, but I still don't know who gave it.”
Luna smiled, her eyes twinkling. “Sometimes magic is a secret. Maybe it's a little bit from everyone—songs, smiles, painted faces, and friends who help find lost buckets.”
Mila looked around. A pirate was helping a princess with her cape. The vampire boy offered his last jelly bean to the witch girl. Even Mrs. Appleby joined in, humming softly as she stacked the last chair.
Mila felt a wave of happiness. Maybe the best gifts weren't always wrapped up in shiny paper. Sometimes, they were kindness, a helping hand, or a new friend.
She reached into her backpack and carefully unwrapped the purple box. Inside was a tiny silver key, sparkling under the library lights. Attached was a note: “For opening new stories. Happy Halloween, Mila!”
Mila's heart soared. The key fit perfectly into the tiny wooden chest in the pumpkin nook—a chest Mila had always wondered about. Inside, she found a notebook with blank pages and a set of colored pens.
On the first page, someone had written: “Write your own adventures. Every story starts with you.”
Chapter 6: Chairs in a Row
As the sun set, the library glowed with orange candlelight. The last song faded, and laughter echoed around the room. Mrs. Appleby called, “Time to tidy up, everyone!”
Mila joined the others, stacking chairs in neat rows and fluffing up the pumpkin nook's cushions. The room felt warm and safe, even as the shadows grew long and Halloween night drew near.
Luna winked from the door, waving goodbye. “See you next time, bookworm!”
Mila waved back, her heart full of magic. She slipped her new notebook and pens into her backpack, already planning the stories she would write.
As she left the library, the cool night air brushed her cheeks. Mila looked up at the starry sky and smiled. Halloween could be spooky, but it was also about kindness, friendship, and a little bit of mystery.
And as the last chair clicked into place, Mila knew she had found more than a present—she had found the magic of sharing, helping, and believing in surprises.
With a happy sigh, she skipped home, dreaming of stories yet to come, and the gentle glow of the library waiting for her next adventure.
