A male clown of about 30 rides a unicycle to Poppy’s left; he has a glittery red nose, a multicolored curly wig, an orange-and-purple striped suit, and leans in to whisper to her. Behind the curtain a white drum dusted with flour has a small fabric fly pinned like a “nose” and appears to be sneezing, set beside a wooden cart filled with clothespins and colorful props. A giant white stuffed rabbit slumps on a crate with a small orange carrot on its belly as if refusing to move. The setting is the backstage of a circus tent: large red-and-white canvas stripes, a wooden floor strewn with light sawdust, yellow hanging lanterns, and stacked crates painted green and blue.
