A smiling, mischievous female inventor with a round face, droopy glasses, a tied green scarf and paint-splattered clothes holds a large sketchbook and presses a red button on a makeshift machine; an amazed eight-year-old girl with brown ponytail and a yellow jacket claps back a step while holding a red polka-dot sock; a regal, amused ginger cat named Marmalade perches on the machine's metal roof; the "Marvelous Multi-Finder" is a patched-together contraption with visible springs, rubber wheels, bike headlamp eyes, a feather-duster tail, a glittered anti-cat roof and exposed screws and string; in a windy workshop-garden with a painted wooden workbench, open toolboxes, overturned flower pots and a clothesline of floating colorful socks, the machine spits a shower of socks in all shapes and colors as the inventor beams, the girl picks one up and the cat watches, in a dynamic composition with bright colors, crisp ink lines and watercolor wash. report a problem with this image

Chapter 1: Mrs. Peabody and the Never-Ending Sock Problem

It was another breezy, biscuit-scented morning on Bumblebee Lane, and Mrs. Peabody was already busy in her garden shed. She wore her lucky green scarf and her hair was tied in a messy bun, ready for a day of inventing. Her hands were covered in blue paint, a sure sign she was planning something special.

“Mrs. Peabody! Mrs. Peabody!” called her neighbor's daughter, Millie, from the garden fence. “Have you seen my red sock? Mum says the washing machine eats them!”

Mrs. Peabody chuckled, pushing her glasses up her nose. “Oh, Millie! Washing machines are famous for gobbling socks. But what if we could invent something to stop that?”

Millie's eyes grew wide. “Could you really, Mrs. Peabody?”

Mrs. Peabody winked. “Let's see! The world needs an invention: The Never-Ending Sock Finder! It'll hunt down every lost sock, even the ones hiding under beds and behind radiators.”

Millie clapped her hands. “Brilliant!”

“First, to the sketchpad!” Mrs. Peabody said. She grabbed her biggest notebook and scribbled: “Invention #347: Sock Finder. Must: 1. Sniff socks, 2. Climb, 3. Squeeze under sofas.” She drew a sock with a superhero cape and giggled. “Let's get to work.”

Mrs. Peabody rummaged through boxes, finding springs, marbles, and old bike bells. She handed Millie a screwdriver. “Inventors always need helpers. Are you ready?”

“I was born ready!” Millie said, beaming.

Soon, the shed was alive with clanging and whirring. “Pass the rubber chicken, Millie!” called Mrs. Peabody.

Millie laughed. “Why do you need a rubber chicken?”

“For bouncing, of course!” Mrs. Peabody grinned. “Every good invention needs a bit of bounce.”

By lunchtime, the Never-Ending Sock Finder looked… well, a little wobbly. It had a long springy neck, blinking eyes made from bike lights, and tiny wheels. A feather duster tail tickled the floor.

“It's perfect!” Mrs. Peabody declared.

“But does it work?” Millie asked, holding up her sockless foot.

“Let's find out!” said Mrs. Peabody, pressing the big red button.

With a squeal and a hiccup, the invention zoomed off—straight into a pile of flowerpots. Crash! Socks flew everywhere.

“Oh, dear,” Mrs. Peabody said, picking up a pink sock from her hat. “It needs a little repairing.”

Millie giggled. “It's very good at finding socks. Too good!”

Mrs. Peabody grinned. “Back to the drawing board.”

Chapter 2: The Great Sock Search and the Tidy-Up Tangle

With Millie's help, Mrs. Peabody fixed the wheels and taped a map to the Sock Finder's side. “Now it can keep track of where it's been!” she said.

“Should we test it in the house?” asked Millie.

Mrs. Peabody nodded. “A home is full of sock-hiding places!”

They tiptoed into the hallway. Mrs. Peabody pressed the button again. This time, the Sock Finder rolled smoothly, nose twitching and duster tail wagging.

“Sniff, sniff!” said Mrs. Peabody, pretending to be the machine.

“Sniff, sniff!” echoed Millie, giggling.

The Sock Finder zipped under the sofa, then under the table. Suddenly, it beeped and popped out with a torn blue sock and a glittery slipper.

“My slipper!” cried Millie. “I thought it ran away!”

Mrs. Peabody laughed. “Looks like our invention finds more than socks.”

They followed the Sock Finder into the kitchen. It sniffed around the bin, poked behind the door, and—bam!—shot out with an old tea towel and a crumpled sock with stars.

“Sock jackpot!” cheered Millie.

Just then, Mrs. Peabody's cat, Marmalade, strolled in. He blinked at the machine, then leaped onto the top, riding it like a king.

“Oh, Marmalade!” Mrs. Peabody groaned, as the Sock Finder zigzagged wildly, cat aboard.

“Should we stop it?” Millie squeaked.

“Don't worry,” Mrs. Peabody said. “Marmalade is a professional rider.”

But Marmalade was heavy. The Sock Finder whined, wheels spinning. With a sudden pop, it slid under the armchair and jammed.

“Oh dear!” said Mrs. Peabody, kneeling down. “Time for inventor repairs!”

She unscrewed the back, pulling out dust bunnies and Marmalade's toy mouse. “A-ha! That's what made it stuck.”

Millie peered over. “Can we fix it?”

“Of course,” Mrs. Peabody smiled. “Every good invention can be put back together, even after a wild cat ride!”

Millie nodded. “Can we make it even better?”

Mrs. Peabody's eyes sparkled. “Let's try!” She scribbled on her notepad: “New features: 1. Cat-proof roof, 2. Tangle untangler, 3. Emergency stop button.”

They worked side by side, tightening bolts and gluing on a sparkly roof. “Perfect for Marmalade's royal bottom!” Mrs. Peabody said.

Chapter 3: The Marvelous Multi-Finder Gets Carried Away

The next day, Mrs. Peabody peered out at a rainy sky. “Perfect inventing weather!” She whistled for Millie, who dashed over in her raincoat.

“Ready for round two?” Mrs. Peabody asked.

“Absolutely!” said Millie.

Mrs. Peabody had made some improvements. The machine now had a cat-proof roof (with a tiny cushion) and a spinning untangler arm. It also had a big yellow button labeled “EMERGENCY STOP.”

“Today's test: Find socks, but don't collect anything else!” Mrs. Peabody said.

Millie nodded seriously. “No slippers. No tea towels. No cats.”

“Agreed! Off you go, Marvelous Multi-Finder!” Mrs. Peabody announced, giving the invention a fresh name.

The machine beeped and zoomed off, nose up, duster tail wiggling. It sniffed, spun, and zipped into the laundry room.

Inside, it poked its nose in the laundry basket and beeped twice. Out popped a striped sock and, whoosh!—a pair of underpants.

“Oops!” said Millie.

Mrs. Peabody laughed. “It's still learning.”

Suddenly, the Marvelous Multi-Finder started scooping up everything: an oven mitt, a woolly scarf, even a toy dinosaur.

“Stop!” cried Mrs. Peabody, pressing the emergency button. The machine froze, spitting out the toy dinosaur.

“I think it likes collecting too much,” Millie said, patting the invention.

Mrs. Peabody nodded. “Every invention has a few surprises. Now, how do we teach it to only find socks?”

She reached for her screwdriver and opened the panel. “Let's see… If I adjust the Sock Sensor and twist the Laundry Locator…”

Millie watched as Mrs. Peabody added a sock-shaped sensor made of cardboard and glitter.

“There!” Mrs. Peabody said. “Now it should only beep for socks.”

They tested it again. The Marvelous Multi-Finder sniffed, beeped, and this time, collected only socks, ignoring everything else.

“Hooray!” cheered Millie. “It's working!”

Marmalade strolled by, eyeing the machine. He hopped onto his cushion and purred, safe on his cat-proof roof.

“Perfect,” Mrs. Peabody smiled. “It's finally just right.”

Chapter 4: The Sock Parade and the Unexpected Fix

That afternoon, Mrs. Peabody and Millie placed all the found socks in the garden. There were stripy socks, spotty socks, and socks with pom-poms.

“We should have a sock parade!” Millie said.

Mrs. Peabody loved the idea. She strung socks on a washing line and invited the neighbors to vote for the silliest pair.

Mr. Jenkins from next door arrived, wearing mismatched socks and a big grin. “My socks have been missing for weeks!” he said.

“Step right up!” Mrs. Peabody announced. “The Marvelous Multi-Finder will find your socks in a jiffy!”

The neighbors cheered as the invention beeped and zoomed around, collecting odd socks from gardens and bushes. Even Mrs. Peabody's old gardening sock turned up, covered in mud.

Suddenly, Mrs. Peabody stepped on something squishy. “Oh no! A soggy sock!”

She picked it up and wrinkled her nose. “This one's beyond repair!”

Millie giggled. “Maybe we can turn it into a sock puppet!”

“Great idea!” said Mrs. Peabody. She grabbed some buttons, yarn, and glue, and soon the soggy sock became Sir Sock-a-lot, a knight with googly eyes and a yarn moustache.

The neighbors laughed and clapped as Mrs. Peabody and Millie put on a sock puppet show. Marmalade joined in by chasing the puppets, which made everyone laugh even more.

“At least every sock has a use!” Mrs. Peabody said, winking.

Mr. Jenkins waved his found socks. “I haven't seen these in years! Thank you, Mrs. Peabody.”

“This invention really is marvelous,” said Millie.

Mrs. Peabody smiled, feeling proud.

Chapter 5: The Next Idea and a Page Turned

That evening, Mrs. Peabody sat in her garden shed, polishing the Marvelous Multi-Finder. Millie helped untangle the duster tail while Marmalade snoozed nearby.

“I think we've fixed the great sock problem of Bumblebee Lane,” Mrs. Peabody said.

“You can fix anything, Mrs. Peabody!” Millie grinned.

Mrs. Peabody shook her head. “Not everything, but if something breaks, we can always try to repair it together. That's the best part of inventing—giving things a second chance.”

Millie nodded, hugging Sir Sock-a-lot.

Mrs. Peabody scribbled in her notebook: “Inventions are never finished—just waiting for the next idea!”

As the sun set, Mrs. Peabody packed away her tools. “What shall we invent tomorrow?” she asked.

“A pancake flipper that sings!” Millie suggested.

Mrs. Peabody laughed. “Now that's an idea worth tinkering with!”

The two friends waved goodbye as Marmalade stretched and yawned. The Marvelous Multi-Finder winked its bike-light eyes, ready for the next adventure.

And so, on Bumblebee Lane, where socks are safe and inventors are always at work, another page was turned—until the next wonderfully wobbly invention.
