Chapter 1: The Smell of Fresh Bread
Mr. Benny woke up very early. It was still dark outside. The stars twinkled, and the moon looked sleepy. Benny was a baker. He loved his job more than anything else.
Every day, Benny put on his big, white baker's hat and his clean, soft apron. His shoes were comfy and safe on the floury floor. When Benny entered his bakery, a cozy bell rang, “Ding-a-ling!” It made him smile.
Inside the bakery, it was warm and bright. The shelves were empty, but soon, they would be full of warm bread and tasty treats! Benny clapped his hands. “Let's get baking!” he cheered. First, he washed his hands with bubbly soap. Clean hands are very important for a baker. “No germs in my dough!” Benny always said.
With clean hands, Benny measured flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. He poured warm water and milk into a big, shiny bowl. He loved to mix the dough with his strong arms. Squish! Squash! Pat! The dough was soft and squishy, like a cozy pillow. Benny always smiled. “Happy bread comes from happy hands!” he sang.
Chapter 2: The Children Visit the Bakery
One sunny morning, as Benny kneaded the dough, he heard cheerful giggles outside. He peeked out the window and saw a group of children with their teacher, Miss Rosie.
“Hello, Mr. Benny!” called the children.
“Good morning, friends!” Benny waved with floury fingers. “Would you like to see the magic of baking?”
“Yes, please!” shouted the children. They bounced through the door, eyes wide and bright. Benny smiled. “First things first! Let's wash our hands to keep our bakery safe and clean.”
The children lined up at the sink. Scrub-a-dub! Rub-a-dub! The soap made funny bubbles. Benny showed them his clean hands. “Bakers must always keep their hands clean. It keeps everyone healthy!” The children nodded.
Benny gave each child a little apron and a tiny baker's hat. “Now we look like real bakers!” laughed Benny. The children giggled and twirled.
Benny pointed to his big bowl of dough. “Who wants to help me knead?”
“I do! I do!” shouted Max.
“Me too!” said Mia.
Benny showed them how to press and fold the dough. “Squish and squash. Fold and push. That's how we make the dough soft and smooth!” The children's fingers danced in the dough. They laughed as the dough stuck to their fingers.
“Baking is fun!” said Max.
Benny nodded. “Baking is fun, and bakers are always careful. We watch the oven. We use safe tools. We make sure everything is just right.”
Chapter 3: Magical Moments in the Kitchen
Benny sprinkled flour on the table. He gave each child a small piece of dough. “Today, we'll make bread rolls and funny shapes! Use your hands to roll, twist, and shape your dough!”
The children got to work. Mia made a doughy snail. Max made a little star. Emma made a wiggly worm! Benny clapped his hands. “Wonderful shapes! So creative! That's the fun of being a baker. You can make tasty art!”
Benny showed them how to use cookie cutters and rolling pins. “Be gentle and careful. Bakers use special tools to help them.”
Soon, the trays were full of silly rolls and shapes. Benny said, “Let's let the dough rest now. It needs a nap to grow bigger and fluffier!”
“Why does the dough need to sleep?” asked Mia.
Benny grinned. “Good question! The yeast in the dough is alive. It eats the sugar and makes tiny bubbles. Those bubbles make the bread rise and become soft and yummy.”
“Oooh!” said the children. “Yeast is like magic!”
“Yes,” Benny laughed, “yeast is bakery magic!”
While the dough rested, Benny showed the children around the bakery. He opened the big, shiny oven. “This gets very hot, so only grown-ups use it. Bakers have to be careful with hot ovens. Safety first!”
Benny showed them the giant mixer. He showed the different flours: soft white, nutty brown, and even one that was green! “Bakers can use many kinds of flour for different tastes and colors.”
“Can bakers bake cakes, too?” asked Max.
“Oh, yes!” said Benny. “Bakers make bread, cakes, cookies, and even pies!”
The children's mouths watered.
Chapter 4: Bread for Everyone
Finally, it was time to bake. Benny and the children carefully put the trays into the oven. Benny set a timer. “Tick-tock, tick-tock. While we wait, let's clean up. Bakers always clean as they go. A tidy bakery is a happy bakery.”
Everyone helped sweep the flour, wash the bowls, and wipe the tables. Benny handed out brushes for brushing off the flour. “Working together is fun!” called Emma.
Ding! The timer rang. Benny put on his big oven mitts. “These keep my hands safe from the heat. Safety is very important in a bakery.” He pulled the trays from the oven. The bakery filled with the wonderful smell of fresh bread.
The children cheered! The rolls were golden and shiny. The doughy shapes had puffed up and looked amazing. Benny smiled, “You are all wonderful bakers!”
Benny let the rolls cool. Then, he showed the children how to paint melted butter over the tops. “This makes them shiny and soft. Like little golden pillows!” said Benny.
Soon, it was time for everyone to taste the bread. Each child took a bite. “Mmm! So warm! So yummy!” said Max. “I love baking!”
“Bakers work hard,” said Benny. “We wake up early, we mix and knead, we bake and create, and we always stay safe. We make food for the whole neighborhood. Baking brings people together.”
Miss Rosie smiled. “Thank you, Mr. Benny, for teaching us about baking!”
Benny's heart was full of joy. He waved as the children left, carrying small bags of bread to share with their families. The bakery was once again quiet, with the smell of fresh bread lingering in the air.
Benny cleaned his oven and hung up his apron. He looked out the window and saw happy children skipping home, their bags swinging. Benny knew he had shared his love and care, just like a true baker does every day.
From that day on, whenever the children passed by the bakery, they waved and called, “Hello, Mr. Benny!” And Mr. Benny always waved back, ready to bake more bread, share more smiles, and fill the world with warm, happy bread.
And every morning, when the sun peeked over the rooftops, Benny's bakery was the first place to smell like happiness. Because that's what a baker does: he brings joy, warmth, and kindness to everyone, one loaf at a time.
