Part 1
Moss the ogre was big, but he was gentle. He had green skin, a warm smile, and a pocket full of shiny pebbles. He lived near Lullaby Lake, where the reeds swayed like sleepy dancers.
Every evening the lake sang.
Sometimes it sang soft: “Hushhh… hushhh…”
But tonight the song wobbled and jumped. “Plink! Plonk! Plunk!” It sounded mixed up, like spoons in a pot.
Moss tilted his head. “Oh, Lake,” he said, “you sound tired.”
A silver fish popped up. “The lake is trying,” it bubbled, “but it needs help.”
Moss patted the water with his big hand. “I will help. I am loyal. I stick with my friends.”
A small dragon, no bigger than a cat, fluttered in. Its wings looked like thin leaves. “I'm Pip,” it said. “I heard the wiggly song.”
From behind a lily pad, a tiny unicorn stepped out. It had a swirl of pink on its horn and mud on its nose. “I'm Nini,” it said, sniffling once. “I came to listen.”
Moss chuckled. “Mud is a fine hat.”
They all listened. The lake tried again: “Hushhh… plonk… hushhh… plink…”
The moon blinked in the water, as if puzzled.
Part 2
Pip hovered over the reeds. “The reeds are tickly,” Pip said. “They are tapping the water too fast.”
Nini nudged a stone. “And these stones are clacking. They want to dance.”
Moss looked at his pebbles. He always carried them to remember his friends. “Maybe the lake needs a steady beat,” he said.
He put one pebble on a flat rock. “Tap.”
Then another. “Tap.”
Then another. “Tap.”
Pip joined in with soft wing-flaps. “Whiff, whiff, whiff.”
Nini added gentle hoof-taps. “Tip, tip, tip.”
Moss smiled wide. “Slow and steady. Like a kind heart.”
The lake listened. The wobbly sounds began to line up. “Hushhh… hushhh…”
A friendly mist floated up, like a blanket made of milk.
But one ripple still jumped. “Plonk!” it said, louder than the rest.
Moss leaned close. “It's okay,” he whispered. “Stay with us. We won't leave you.”
The ripple calmed. “Hushhh,” it sighed, happy to belong.
Part 3
Now the lake sang a smooth song, bright and sleepy:
“Hushhh… hushhh…”
It sounded like rocking a cradle.
Pip yawned. “Your pebbles are magic,” Pip said.
“They are not magic,” Moss said. “They are reminders. Loyalty makes a strong rhythm.”
Nini giggled. “Then your pocket is a cozy choir!”
Moss laughed, low and soft. The moon's light sprinkled the water like sugar. The reeds swayed slow. The stones settled down.
“Thank you,” whispered the lake.
Moss dipped his toes in the cool water. “Any time,” he said. “Friends help friends. That is what I do.”
Pip curled on Moss's shoulder. Nini rested by his knee. Together they listened to the calm, steady song.
“Hushhh… hushhh… hushhh…”
And Lullaby Lake, at last, sounded like bedtime.
